Mary Jane was born to Nick and Mary Block of Lindsay, TX on January 19th, 1938. She graduated from Lindsay High School and then attended University of Dallas for a short period of time. She married Herb Fleitman of Muenster, TX on May 30th, 1959 and moved to Denison where Mary Jane worked at the bank and Herb worked at Johns Manville. Once they started a family, Mary Jane became a full-time mom, raising their three boys - Mike, Don and Jim. Weeks were filled with various family and school activities – band, 4-H, football, church. Once Jim entered grade school, she returned to work, working for the Denison ISD as a substitute teacher, librarian or secretary for 15 years. Herb passed away on November 6th, 1990.
After Herb died, Mary Jane started selling Catholic Life Insurance and joined a grief counseling group. One of the other participants in the grief counseling group was David Carter, who had recently lost his wife of 25 years, Ruth. Mary Jane and David were married on July 25th, 1992 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sherman, TX. They purchased a house east of Denison for the large oak trees, and spent their time traveling and enjoying the property. I think having all of the families over – especially grandkids – was the highlight of their time. Mary Jane passed away Sunday afternoon after battling Parkinson’s for over 5 years.
Mary Jane was preceded in death by her parents Nick and Mary Block, her first husband Herb Fleitman, and her older sister and brother-in-law Clem and Rita Sandmann. She is survived by her younger sister and brother-in-law Carolyn and Dennis Lutkenhaus, her second husband David Carter, her three boys and daughters-in-law Mike and Susan Fleitman of Longmont, CO, Don and Peggy Fleitman of Dallas, TX, and Jim and Kim Fleitman of Hickory, NC, four grandchildren Travis and (wife) Allie Fleitman, Chelsea Fleitman, Eric Fleitman and Lindsay Fleitman, and two great-grandchildren Emma Fleitman and Agnes Fleitman (daughters of Travis and Allie).
