Funeral service for Velma Ruth (Green) Hemperley, 93, a resident of Denison, will be held at 2:00 on Wednesday, October 26, at Fairview Chapel in Denison, Texas. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Fairview Chapel.
Mrs. Hemperley passed away on Saturday, October 22, 2016, after enduring several months of health problems.
Most of her working career was spent at Curry Engineering in Muskogee, Oklahoma in various secretarial positions. After moving to Denison in 1968 her time was devoted entirely to her family. She was a loving and caring person, a devoted wife and friend. A stronger woman you would not find, definitely one of the “great generation”. Always supportive and encouraging, she sacrificed her needs for the good of the family.
Velma was married to J.D. Hemperley in Durant, Oklahoma in 1945. She was a telephone operator and he worked nights at the MKT Railroad. Needless to say those nights were long and conversations with the operators were quite common. They eventually met and were married and called Muskogee, Oklahoma their home. They celebrated their 50th anniversary shortly before his death in 1995. She was also predeceased by her parents, Clarence and Bertha Lily Green, and sister, Mary Lewsaw.
She is survived by her three children, Judy (Charles) Holder, Marilyn (Mike) Riley and Mark (Brenda) Hemperley. Also six grandchildren that adored her; Dr. Chad Riley and Caryn, Jason Riley and Jenie, Justin Holder and Ann, Ashley and Brian Ohrt, Brent Hemperley and Shea and Sean Hemperley and Kirsten. Also survived by 16 great-grandchildren, sisters, Emma hull and Betty Harris and brother Clarence “Bud” Green, Jr.
Velma loved to garden, watch the hummingbirds, listen to gospel music and a little Merle Haggard occasionally and oh did she love to shop…
The service will be conducted by Pastor Louella Williams of Virginia Point Methodist Church.
