She was born on March 8, 1917 in a small Mississippi town, just a hop, skip and jump from the Tennessee border. Mama was proud of her southern roots and always considered herself a southern girl. She attended the Mississippi School for the Deaf where she played on the basketball team. She loved learning to cook and sew and had ambitions to become a home economics teacher until she met our father. It wasn’t exactly love at first sight, but Daddy finally won her over and they were married on October 9, 1937 in Hernando, Mississippi. Daddy loved his beautiful southern belle and they were married just shy of 60 years until he passed away.
And southern belle she was! The south is known for its hospitality and our mama was never happier than when she was serving suppers, cooking for a banquet, baking for a bake sale or planning a party! Why, we all practically grew up at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church while she donned her apron and put on a great feast for the deaf! If she was not at the church, she was attending meetings at the Frat, (National Fraternal Society of the Deaf) camping with the Talking Hand Sams, bowling at Celebrity with her friends or playing cards at the SAC. (Silent Athletic Club) She loved to be around people and was a valued member of the deaf community in Colorado.
Good old southern values stress love for the family and Mama truly did love her family. There are a myriad of nieces and nephews who call her Aunt Big Sister and love to hug her neck and see her smile. They treated her like a queen and she loved them for it and talked about them often. In her own family, she was the matriarch for 5 children, 13 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren or great-great grandchildren, with another on the way! Nothing would please her more than to make things for her family, from hand stitched quilts and embroidered linens to little plastic canvas coasters that kept her busy almost to the end of her days.
Our mama was a beautiful southern lady who lived a long life full of love from her family and respect from her friends. We are sad with her passing, but rejoice that she is with Daddy, her grandson Ronnie, her brothers and sisters and with our Lord.
We love you Mama,
