

He was a resident of Centennial, Colorado. Don is survived by his wife Patrice Spain, sister, Diane and her husband, Roger Hively, son, Thomas Carlson and wife Sherri, daughter, Karen Izzo and husband, O. Izzo, grandchildren Evan, Rory and Zane Thomas, Kirstyn Carl and her husband, David, nephew, Brian Hively and his wife Victoria (Tori) and their sons Brayden, Alex and Nathan, niece, Gretchen Shaffer and husband Chris and daughter Landrie, niece, Rebecca Taylor and husband Lance and their son, Jeremiah (JT), and step-daughter Macie. Don is also survived by his sister-in-law, Paula Spain. Don was preceded in death by his parents Esther and Einar Carlson and his sister Ellen Matti.
Don was born in Cleveland,OH to Esther and Einar Carlson. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Technology from Ohio University. His career took him to several companies, including Cummins, Arvin Meritor and Rockwell.
Some of Don’s varied interests were fishing, model trains, model airplanes, model boat building, and he loved to travel. Of the many charities Don was involved with, three stand out: American Macular Degeneration Foundation, South Denver Cardiology Foundation and the Multiple Myeloma Foundation. Don will be remembered for his courage, perseverance and kindness.
A memorial service will be held on February 9, 2026, at 11:00 am at Olinger Hampden Mortuary, located at 8600 E. Hampden Ave., Denver, CO 80231.
