Mom, from your only son, we had a life together after you put me through school, then we had a good life together. Starting when during school years, and after you let me rodeo. Starting with gymnastics that lead me to rodeo. Mainly bull riding but thanks to one of my friends I couldn't finish our dream we both had. But I still thank you for the opportunity to go as far as I did. So thank you very much!

Dorethys Life 

She was a Secretary, Waitress and A bookkeeper for a plumbing company, when her kids were little, raising them on her own.
She met Jack Thomas, a Baptist preacher and roofing contractor with his own company. Dorethy married jack and worked for his roofing company, including actual roofing.
They bought a house in 1966, in Arvada, living there until Jack passed away of lung cancer in 1967.
Here Dorethy had her 3rd back surgery, with many complications and lots of pain.
From here, Dorethy moved herself and the kids to North Denver for a short period of time and adopted a Malamute Ranger.
From Denver, she moved to Westminster and got a job driving a school bus for Denver Public Schools.
She began rodeoing with her son Kevin, traveling all over a four state region following Kevin's dream of being a championship bull rider. These were happy years.
She met Harvey Golden and pulled many pranks on him and his vehicle. They were married shortly after. They bought a motor home for these trips, and many camping and fishing trips with Harvey's guidance. Dorethy was chased by a moose on an early fishing trip! She was proud to out-fish everybody! They adopted a black Labrador retriever, named Sarah, who was the love of their lives, to join their cat in residence.
In 1980, Harvey and Dottie bought a house in Bear Valley. Finally she had what she always wanted, a permanent home with a yard she could dig in! She loved gardening and proved to have a green thumb with outdoor plants. But she couldn't grow an indoor plant to save her life.
The back yard was large and she made 9 different gardens in it and worked on them every day, sun up to sundown.
Dorethy had a pension for trophy roses and entered them at the Denver Botanical Gardens, coming home with many blue ribbons. She also created hybrids by splicing together two types of roses, again bringing home more ribbons.
In 1980, her son Kevin was in a horrific automobile accident where three people died. He came away with brain damage and multiple lifelong injuries to his body. She took it upon herself to get Kevin back to being a functioning adult. It was a long and grueling process. Kevin became her right hand in the yard and accompanied Harvey and Dottie on their many camping and fishing trips.
After five back surgeries, Dottie was no longer to work at everything she loved.
Over the years the pain got so bad she became house bound in a wheelchair and on full time oxygen. She had prayed for release, and God heard her call and called her home, with little suffering. Waiting for her is her older sister, Ann, her mother and father, Irene and Lawrence Birdsill, and all her closest friends who preceded her in death.

Dear Dorethy,

I wanted to thank you for welcoming me into your home when I most needed it  you always made me feel welcome and even loved.
Although we miss you, I feel good in knowing the pain of illness is behind you and you have gone on to join your loved ones who preceded you in death. You told me you knew you would see them again, and that thought sustained you and made you unafraid of death.
I miss seeing you at your computer and ordering dinner differently from the planned meal! Ha.
I'm sorry we didn't get that last perm in to send you off in style.
I like to think I brought you happiness in your last years and that thought sustains me.

Dearest Mother,
I am so happy that we got along so well these last few months and when we did mix it up it felt very much like our old phone calls to one another demanding a fight because one or both of us needed to yell, scream and fight and we could always depend on each other for that! I will never ever forget my favorite yelling match with you. When I was yelling up at you at the top by the stairs and you became so frustrated you lost your voice then put both hands on both hips and stomped your foot! You were so incredibly cute! I broke out giggling and laughing, I asked you if you would please do it again. You looked SO CUTE! You tried not to smile but our anger was broken and you grinning we couldn't get angry again. Bless you were so very adorable- hands on hips, stomping your foot Whenever I need a smile I bring that memory up to mind, just a three second memory that can change my entire day. Your competitiveness in your games in bowling, in your one fishing everyone in the family or bringing home the only kill from hunting with Harvey and Kevin for elk, deer or antelope. You always strove to be the best at everything you did including your back yard gardening, which produced Blue Ribbon Trophy roses you would enter at Denver Botanical gardens, bringing home many 1st place ribbons and prizes. Also creating new' roses never seen before by splicing two or three different ones together, creating a new rose  never seen before. You always strove for the best vibrant colors plus north cold hardiness and favorable scent. You succeeded more often than not in getting another Blue Ribbon Rose created by you and you alone. You taught me so very much about outdoor gardening and with your guidance the one and only time I attempted to create a new type of rose, I succeeded to be awarded my first Blue Ribbon for health and hardiness and I created a color never seen before on a rose. All because of your love of gardening, roses and me we created the Stainless Steel floribunda single stem rose. Thanks, mom for all you taught me and your all-encompassing love. Now you are free and painless and I thank God for that. Say hello to everyone and I will see you again when I join you there.
