Drewlene Russell, 80, passed peacefully into the arms of our Lord on Saturday, December 30th, 2017 surrounded by love in Aurora, CO. It is sad that she is no longer with us but there is great joy she is no longer suffering . The love of her life and husband of 57 years, Charlie Russell, preceded her in death. Drewlene is survived by her daughter, Debbi Leggett of Centennial, CO and sons Drew Russell of Euless, TX and Charlie Russell Jr. of Ellendale, ND. Her pride and joy were her 10 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
Drewlene taught us all how to fight. In 2002 she was diagnosed with cancer and was given four months to live. With her true west Texas grit and her deep faith in God she fought off the cancer time and time again. The Lord just wasn't finished with her yet. She was the calming voice for her many “chemo buddies”. It was her mission to help ease the fear of new cancer patients. She had the last laugh - her heart gave out before the cancer could get her.
Drewlene was born in El Paso, TX January 25, 1937 and lived there for most of her 80 years. She was a founding member of the First Christian Church of Cortez, CO and Coronado Christian Church on the west side. She will be remembered by the many lives she touched through her 30+ years in Girl Scouting. She held many different volunteer positions including a board member of the Rio Grande Girl Scout Council but her passion was working with the girls as a scout leader for Troop 95 and Troop 159. She was most proud of taking the first troop in the council to Hawaii. She enjoyed writing science fiction stories and was an avid Star Trek fan traveling to Star Trek conventions and meeting fellow Trekkies.
Her Celebration of Life will be at 1 PM Thursday, January 4th at Olinger Hampton Funeral Chapel, 8600 E Hampden Ave, Denver, CO 80231. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Coronado Christian Church or the American Cancer Society.
