10/18/1948 – 04/09/2026
Edward Nicoll (Nick) Weighton, 77, passed away Thursday, April 9, 2026 in Denver, Colorado following a brief illness. Nick was born October 18, 1948 in Fernandina Beach, Florida on Amelia Island.
After graduating High School, Nick attended Florida State University. Before graduating, he was drafted into the Army. During his Army career of 29 ½ years, Nick was stationed at numerous bases around the country as well as Germany and South Korea. He completed Officer Training School and finished his college degree receiving a Master of Science in Personnel Management from Florida State University.
Nick was a skilled worker in so many ways. After retiring from the Army, Nick used his skills to remodel and finish basements. He was a one-man show as he was meticulous in his work. He also loved to share knowledge gained through his military service with others. After joining the Colorado Mountain Club, Nick volunteered to train members in the schools for Mountain Trekking, Basic Mountaineering, Rock Climbing and survival. Through the club he connected with someone from Safety One Training Center. Nick began working with them, training companies’ employees in safety and survival, as well as tower climbing and rescue, as required to meet OSHA standards for workers in the field. Nick was always busy, and in the mountains as much as possible.
Nick met his wife, Ramona (Mona) Styskal Weighton through the Mountain Club’s summer volleyball program. They hiked, climbed and camped together for years before retiring from the more strenuous outdoor activities. After volleyball, the group would go out and Nick always had interesting stories to tell of his travels and his family. He was very proud to be of Scottish heritage and often told of his father serving in the Scottish Army in WWI and his immigration to Canada and finally into the United States.
Nick was preceded in death by his parents, Gilbert and Mary (Gibson) Weighton, a brother, Gilbert Weighton, and an aunt, Catherine Gibson, all of Fernandina Beach. He is survived by his wife, Ramona (Mona) Weighton, and an older brother, David Weighton, of Jacksonville, Florida. Nick’s beloved cats, Bert and Ernie, are also grieving his loss.
No services are planned. Contributions can be made in Nick’s behalf to the charity of your choice.
