1928 - 2012
83, native of Denver, passed away March 15 at Porter Hospice at the Johnson
Center. His wife of 62 years, Patricia; children Patrice (Forrest McClure),
Kathleen (Mark Tindall), Mary (Duane Root); grandchildren, Melanie, Brian,
Molly, Elizabeth, Michael, Katie and Chelsea; and nine great grandchildren,
Liam, Hayden, Lawson, Heidi, Luke, Frankie, Brendan, Sara and Gabe survive
him. John was an Eagle Scout (3 Palms) of Denver's first Boy Scout Troop #1
and remained true to the ETO creed, "Winners never quit, and quitters never
win." While attending East High School he attempted to enlist in the Navy at
16. Then succeeded a year later and served on the USS Missouri from 1946-48
as a diver (underwater demolition) and Navy Reserves from 1948-53. He
graduated from the University of Denver in 1952 and became a Civil Engineer.
He worked for various government agencies in that capacity rising to the
position of Assistant Region Administrator for HUD and served Denver Mayor
William McNichols as Director of Community Development. He retired from the
Denver Water Department in 1993 after serving as its first Conservation
Officer and Principal Lobbyist at the Colorado State Legislature for three
years. In addition to his education and work, he was a Navy Reserve boxing
champion, a Registered Professional Sanitarian and Licensed Insurance
