A gifted classical pianist, LaNell’s musical talent was evident early in life. She was accepted into The Juilliard School, a testament to her extraordinary ability and discipline. She went on to earn her undergraduate degree from the University of Denver, followed by a Master’s degree in Education from the University of Colorado. Learning, creativity, and personal growth were lifelong passions that shaped both her professional and personal life.
LaNell enjoyed traveling and had a deep appreciation for cultures around the world. As part of her career as Director of Foreign Student Administration and Academic Advising, she had the unique opportunity to travel extensively and set foot on every continent except Antarctica. These experiences reinforced her belief in global understanding, education, and connection across cultures.
Music remained a central part of LaNell’s heart. She lovingly played the piano for the church she attended, The Denver Gospel Hall, a congregation founded by her father, Jim Reynolds. Through her music, she offered worship, comfort, and joy to generations within that community.
LaNell was deeply committed to service beyond her home. She served on the board of the AIDS Foundation, worked tirelessly with Habitat for Humanity, and was a founder of CORE. Her compassion was active and intentional—she believed in showing up, lending a hand, and standing alongside those in need.
LaNell was preceded in death by her sister Alice Holman. She is survived by her siblings Michaela Massey and John Reynolds.
As a mother, LaNell had a truly big heart. She gave her children the freedom to be exactly who they were meant to be—encouraging their individuality, honoring their spirits, and offering unconditional love and unwavering support. Her home and heart were places of acceptance, safety, and deep care.
She was the devoted mother of five children:
• James Rhone (spouse Katherine Rhone)
• Lewis Rhone (spouse Otavia Rhone)
• Tikki Whitaker (spouse Stacy Whitaker)
• Earl Crownhart
• Cynthia Crownhart
As a grandmother, LaNell was fully present and deeply involved. She cherished each of her grandchildren—Bryse, Brooklyn, Sevannah, Monet, Madox, Devin Kennedy, and Kristian—building meaningful, loving relationships with each one in her own thoughtful way. She was also a proud and loving great-grandmother to Tristan and Rhone, finding great joy in watching her family grow across generations.
LaNell will be remembered for her intellect, musical brilliance, global curiosity, servant’s heart, and the profound love she poured into her family. Her legacy lives on through the lives she nurtured, the students she guided, the causes she championed, the music she shared, and the generations who carry her spirit forward.
A memorial service to celebrate LaNell’s life will be held on Thursday, January 8, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Olinger Hampden Mortuary & Cemetery in Denver, Colorado, with a livestream available for those unable to attend.
