It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Rafael "Alberto" Buitrago, who passed away unexpectedly at the age of 65 on April 3, 2025, in Aurora, Colorado, as the result of a tragic hit-and-run accident. Alberto was born on December 9, 1959, in Bogotá, Colombia, to Rafael Alonso Buitrago and Maria Ines Chaparro.
Alberto was a loving husband, father, brother, and uncle. He married his beloved wife, Luz Buitrago, on July 6, 1996, in Denver, Colorado, and together they shared nearly three decades of marriage, building a life full of love and shared memories. Rafael is survived by his wife Luz Buitrago, his son Jonathan Buitrago, and his sister Elizabeth Buitrago. He also leaves behind a large extended family, including his nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws, all of whom will miss his kind spirit deeply.
He is preceded in death by his loving parents Rafael Alonso Buitrago and Maria Ines Chaparro.
Alberto was an accomplished and dedicated professional, having worked for companies such as MoneyGram and Grandpike. He earned a degree in Accounting/Finance from Universidad Libre in Bogotá, Colombia, and his contributions to the companies he worked for were always highly valued. He was known for his remarkable work ethic, his generosity, and his commitment to his colleagues and loved ones.
Beyond his professional achievements, Albert was passionate about life’s simple pleasures. He enjoyed hiking, bike riding, and watching soccer. He had a love for playing chess and was always eager to share a game with friends and family. Known for his humility, patience, and sense of humor, Rafael also volunteered his time and resources to help others. He gave blood to his niece, Valerie Muñoz, when she needed it most and consistently served meals at his local church during Thanksgiving.
Alberto strongly disliked highways, social media, and often avoided confrontations, preferring instead to live a peaceful and supportive life, always putting his loved ones first. His life was defined by unity, love, and protection—values that he lived by and instilled in all those who knew him.
Nova was not just a pet, but Alberto's constant companion. She was smart, lovable, and the best company anyone could ask for. The two were inseparable, and it brings some comfort to know they remained that way in their final moments. The life of Alberto’s wife will never be the same without her husband, best friend, and their little fur baby, Nova. Their bond, their love, and the everyday joy they shared will be missed beyond words.
Alberto’s passing leaves a profound void in the lives of those who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be remembered not just for his kindness and contributions but also for the gentle spirit he brought to every room he entered.
