
She was born in Livingston, Tennessee on September 22, 1914, the second of seven children born to Henry David Harrison and Ernestine Lavinnia Harrison and grew up in Oklahoma where she graduated from Wheatley High School in Boynton, Oklahoma. She attended Langston University in Langston, Oklahoma.
Vera was married to James Hollowell, Sr. in September 1940 and they were blessed with two sons, James and Joseph Ernest.
She later married Charles L. Matthews in 1958 and they were blessed with a daughter, Sherri Ann. Vera was a homemaker, housekeeper, cook, foster parent, wife, mother and a friend to many.
She accepted the Lord Jesus Christ at an early age and kept a bible near for reading and guidance when she was unable to attend church services.
She was a member of Genesis Baptist Church in Denver pastored by John L. Brown Sr.
Vera loved her family, family activities, traveling, cooking, reading her bible and enjoying her friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents Henry and Ernestine Harrison, husband Charles Matthews, sisters Velma Johnson, Violet Jones, Hazel Harrison, brothers Ruben David Harrison and William Harrison.
Those left to cherish her memory include her brother Joe Glenn Harrison (Mattye Pearl) of Haskell, Oklahoma, two sons James (Linda) of Oberlin, Kansas and Joseph Hollowell of Denver, Colorado and daughter Sherri Ann (Steven) Hudson of Denver, Colorado and step-daughter Mary Alice Ladue of St. Louis, Missouri; 8 delightful grandchildren, 10 wonderful great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson; numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and other relatives and friends.
