Passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 21, 2026.
He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years Lidia Pundy, nee Starodub, sons Paul (partner Michelle Hunt) and Alex (Rebecca),
granddaughters Jessica and Jordan, goddaughters Natalie Neczwid Gottschalk (Dr. Jay), Stephanie Procyk (Adam Shamoon), Dr. Alexandra Melnyk (Dr. Cody Rutledge), and Christina Dykun-Murdoch (Ryan), siblings Dr. Joseph, Dr. Christine (Andrij Neczwid), and Dr. Larissa (Taras Bozio), and sister-in-law Laryssa Starodub.
He leaves behind many extended family, friends, and colleagues.
Andrew was born December 13, 1947, in Regensburg, Germany, to medical student Pavlo Pundy and Daria (nee Sklepkovych), a teacher. They emigrated to the United States in 1950 and settled in Willimantic, CT, where they resided for three years before moving to Chicago, IL.
Andrew's family lived in Chicago's Ukrainian Village where he was a member of PLAST and went to St. Nicholas Cathedral School, where he also attended Saturday Ukrainian School.
In 1966 he graduated from St. Ignatius High School and went on to a pre-med major at the University of Illinois. In 1969 he began his studies at the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara (Mexico), where he received his medical degree in 1973.
Dr. Pundy did his residency in psychiatry at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. He then practiced in numerous hospitals in the Chicagoland area, including the Abraham Lincoln School of Medicine at the University of Illinois as clinical assistant professor of psychiatry from 1979-1991.
He has been an attending physician at Lutheran General Hospital since 1984.
For the past 30 years Andy has shared office space with Dr. Ann Walczynski and was blessed with a dedicated staff that included his son, Paul, and office manager Shalon Jefferson.
Dr. Pundy was a member of the American Society of Addiction Medicine and UMANA (Ukrainian Medical Association of North America).
Dr. Pundy had a very rich life. He loved to travel around the world, often including his family, and has visited over 20 countries including Patagonia, Australia, Egypt, Ukraine, and Borneo. When asked why he liked Borneo, he replied that he was awed by the bat caves there that host millions of bats and where 3 million emerge in nightly dusk departures.
Andrew was fascinated with world travel and history, loved to read science fiction, and participated frequently with his sons in tabletop gaming conventions. He was a humanitarian, going on several UMANA-sponsored medical missions to Ukraine. Recently he and his wife, Lidia, sponsored three Ukrainian families who were fleeing the war in Ukraine, while in the past they hosted foreign students studying in the US.
