Eleanor was born in Chicago on February 3,1924 to Austrian and German immigrants, George and Anna (Auer) Pratscher. She came into this world with her twin sister, Doris, who remained her best friend until Doris’ death. Together with her sister, Eleanor attended Waller High School in Chicago where they were both valedictorians of their class. Eleanor then studied Dietetics at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) which led her to a life-long and respected career in the field. At IIT, she met her husband of 55 years, Robert F. Betz. The couple later resided in Clarendon Hills where they raised three daughters.
Eleanor’s life was nothing short of amazing. She loved music, the arts, reading, travel, and learning throughout her life. Friendships were especially important to her. Intelligent, kind, patient, interesting and generous, Eleanor was a friend to many. Her vibrant energy and her zest for life had a positive impact on all who were blessed to have known her. Above all, Eleanor cherished her family. Her unconditional love for them was legendary. She was their rock, she was their inspiration, she was their shining star. Eleanor was the best mother and grandmother.
Eleanor leaves behind three daughters: Melanie Betz Gregory, Jennifer (Bob) Guthrie and Laura (Scott) Jacobs; nine grandchildren: Emily (Matt) Gonnerman, Andrew Guthrie, Jill Guthrie, Colin (Jess) Jacobs, Seth Gregory, Anna Gregory, Ian Gregory, Jan Jacobs and Tess (Lee) Black; and five great-grandchildren: Evan, Michael and Marie Gonnerman, Gabriel Black and Adrian Jacobs; nephew, Lowell (Laurie) Peterson, his daughters, Lexi and Kirsten Peterson, their mother, Liz Engelman; sisters-in-law: Sister Mary Laurette Betz, Margaret (Ron) Gambla, Maryann Betz and Marilyn Betz; and many other family members and friends. Eleanor is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert; her sister, Doris Peterson; and her son-in-law, Larry Gregory.
