To the Self family, you have my deepest condolences. I only got to know Garrett a very short time as a brand new hire at UMWW, but within that time, he made me feel very welcomed.

I started working at UM in January, and about a week before Christmas, Garrett sent me a personalized email welcoming me to the company. He said he would connect with me on my first day and he kept his promise! 

He scheduled a video chat with me and he took the time to get to know me. He was very kind, I remember his smile well. This is my first job in the advertising industry and I shared with him how difficult it was for me to find desired jobs after graduating college. He talked about his college-aged daughter and her career interests. He said that, although he would happily help her, she would still have to work for it and earn it herself. He showed me that as a parent, he taught his kids to have a good work ethic and character.

Though I had only known Garrett for a short time, his passing was and is a shock to the core. I am so sad he had to leave so soon. I wish I could have gotten the chance to learn from him like so many people have. I’m thankful I got to know the goodness of Garrett that everyone has spoken of, even if a little bit. How blessed are you to have so many amazing memories and photos to cherish to help you get through the days ahead. I said a special prayer for you all. *hugs* Rest well, Garrett. 

I had not seen Garrett since I was in college. We both played ball at CBHS. I was 2 grades ahead. We also refereed grade school games together.  He was an affable guy and always had a smile.  From all his condolences it looks like he lived life well. Hugs to all his family and friends. 

My deepest condolences and much love and prayers to Laura, Jacklyn, Peyton and Hudson, Garrett’s Dad, John, and all the his family. Garrett was certainly one of the good ones, gone much too soon. It’s hard to separate any memories of grade school and high school from Garrett because so many include him.  My family lived around the corner from his and it seems like he was always at my house, sometimes even when I wasn’t there just chatting with my Mom and Dad, or I was walking down to his to hang out while he and his Mom shot baskets in the backyard. And she was GOOD.  She would beat him and I would rag him for days. There were so many laughs and good times. Inside jokes and teenage craziness. In grade school playing the Bacon Bowl and St Ann winning the PAA championships. Hanging with the basketball team at CBHS or at the Stephany’s in the row boat with the Catholic crowd, Garrett fit in seamlessly everywhere and was everyone’s friend. My favorite story is the green pizza. Garrett came home from Evansville for the summer and his car reeked. We all gave him hell and he would get upset and defensive. We took a road trip to Six flags in St. Louis with Quigley and my brother Brandon. Garrett drove and was so proud he detailed his car and it smelled great. It did not. First pit stop Quigley reaches under the seat for his shoes and pulls out an Emo’s pizza box(from Evansville-at least 6 weeks old cooking in the Memphis heat) and it was filled with rancid green pizza. All 4 windows went down immediately and Keith tossed it out for some unfortunate animal to find. And we laughed about Garrett’s fresh smelling car. Life took us in different directions, but he still messaged me on my birthday each year to tease me about how much older I was for 24 hours. Garrett was one of the best and most decent human beings I have ever known. He was a treasured and devoted friend. He was hilarious and made my life better for having known him. Give your Mom a big hug from me. I love you. 

I am so grateful to you and Garrett for always having my back: at Tatham, omd, seeing the plays, giving me rides to work (loved those mornings!) and spending time with you all over the city. This doesn’t seem real and Garrett will be missed. 

Garrett and I played golf together many, many, times.  Most recently on September 3rd to kick off Labor Day weekend.  Sure we talked about the media business.  However, the conversation always turned back to the kids, our amazing wives, and family.   The most important  stuff in life.  So, I still have that score card.  Its sitting on my desk.  It makes me smile when I look at it.  I know Garrett is playing his best golf, under sunny skies on the green fairways of Heaven.  

The Selfs - I have been so lucky to know Garrett and your whole family for majority of my life. I am so thankful for Jacklyn and the friendship we have. Garrett was such an amazing person and never failed to make me laugh. I am thinking of you all and how incredibly strong you are. ❤️

I was lucky to have met Garrett while working in the marketing department of ALDI. I always appreciated that he made an effort to get to know me outside of my role and really cared about what was going on in my life. My dad passed away in February 2021 and Garrett sent a card to my house with his sympathies and condolences for my loss. I remember looking at the envelope and thinking "did I send myself something?" since the return address just said "Self".  The fact that he took the time out of his day made me feel cared for. I can't believe I am now sending my sympathies and condolences for the loss of him.  I'm so heartbroken for his family and friends and anyone that had the opportunity to cross paths with Garrett. He will be missed.

A beloved fraternity brother and friend... his family has my most sincere condolences, thoughts, and prayers, at this challenging time.

I worked with Garrett a few years ago when he was working for SCJ.  He was a great client and a truly nice, friendly, thoughtful person.  I'm so saddened to hear of this and sending deepest condolences to his family and friends!

Garrett will be missed by so many of us whose lives were blessed with his presence.  Our families became close, especially Tripp and Huddy growing up across the street from each other in Grosse Point and playing so many different sports together.  We had a great neighborhood with a lot of kids the same age, and we all watched out for each other, and had many fun gatherings.  Garrett was someone you could always count on for help.  Many of you have heard about the New Year's Eve story with our dog Chip who was always a thorn in his side, but he would never say no if we needed his help.  Wrigley and Chip are best buds.  A group of us went to New Orleans and Garrett was the one scouting out cool music venues and bands and places for us all to go and see.  He was a true leader in many ways, and a man of honor. 
We shared many conversations about music and sports and loved trying to one up each other telling jokes.  He has a great sense of humor.  We coached the kids together and he would always remind me of the "sacred playbook" that we used for flag football, my way of trying to motivate the kids with some humor.  He always was a good sport about the group Halloween costumes (he was an impressive Gregg Brady and pulled off Mr. Roper pretty well too) and that brought fun and humor to many people.  Kim would like to make a confession now (sorry Garrett) one day she was laughing so hard she peed on the floor of their house, and when Garrett came home he thought Wrigley did it and wiped it up complaining about the dog having an accident in the house......Laura was always volunteering Garrett to do things like taking the kids swimming or whatever and Garrett would have this look on his face, but was a good sport.
Why do the good ones leave us so soon?  It's just too hard to imagine, but we will continue to talk about him and his love for life and his family, and that will help to keep his spirit alive, and we know he is always with us.   

Garrett was so welcoming and friendly towards me when I was pretty new to reprise advertising. He was great at being conversational and always made everyone laugh. He will be missed dearly. Sharing the most love and health possible to his dear family and friends 

I have not seen Garrett since HS graduation in 1990 as we went our separate ways.  I remember in Jr. High playing St. Ann's and they had 3 guys more than a foot taller than me and beating our brains in, Garrett was one of them.  I hated it!  He was cocky and good and I didn't like that he was better than I was at basketball.  

I also fondly remember having study hall together with Mrs. Hannigan and she would let us do whatever we wanted to, within reason, as we (mostly Garrett) would make her laugh.  I remember specifically talking about the Simpson TV show debut, and writing new lyrics to Tom Petty's new song Free Falling.  Specifically I remember his lyric - "she was crazy about pelvis."  

I am very sad to hear about this and for the family.  I hope that the family can smile thinking back to some memories when their husband/dad was just a kid too.  

My sincere condolences to the family and friends of Garret.  May God give you the strength to know he truly is in a better place,.  In Heaven with his mama.

 (my son Keith Quigley and Garret were  good friends).  I remember Garret as a fine young man.  My heart goes out to all of you.


Garrett was one of the good guys in the Advertising business — a true gentleman who made everyone around him better by his quiet creativity and level-headed demeanor. He will be missed. 

Garrett- I’ll forever treasure our conversations about music, basketball and life over the past 10 years at so many youth soccer and basketball games. You left a mark on so many people- I’ll never hear another Allman Brothers or John Prine song without thinking of you. Godspeed my friend.  Patrick Todd.
