

Harold H. Horstman, 96, of Morton Grove & Deerfield, IL. Born 11/30/1917 in Grand Island, Nebraska, died early Saturday, August 17 at Rainbow Hospice Ark with his fiancé, Bette, his beloved dog Millie and his two step granddaughters Tina & Mickey by his side. Hal was a long standing Sox fan (Bette Cubs), loved his Morton Grove Moose Family, The American Legion and Nebraska football. Feeding the birds in Florida while watching the sunset with Bette gave them both joy. He entered the army at 18 in 1936, serving in the Philippines prior to WWII. Serving in 1942 under General Patton, he fought in Africa & Sicily. He was proud to be with the famous 1st Division (Big Red) & fought in the bloodiest battles of France, Belgium & Nazi Germany. He was awarded the Bronze Star with 5 stars & a Purple Heart. He was chosen to be the first WWII vet to command the American Legion Rogers Park Post 108. Hal owned & operated The Wayside Inn in Chippewa Falls, WI & was active in community affairs until moving to Hawaii where he managed a large condominium. First married to Bette Sachs, later to Sigrid Olsen who already had two daughters, Judy & Karen. Preceded in death by Sigrid & step grandson Sammy. Visitation will be at Oehler Funeral Home, 2099 Miner St, Des Plaines on Sunday, August 24 from 3:00-8:00 pm. Memorial service will be in September at the Moose Family Lodge. Bette requests in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Wounded Warriors Project, Disabled American Veterans, or PETA.
