Sang Kyung (Choi) Lee

Sang-Kyung (Jennie) Lee, nee Choi, age 88 of Chicago, passed away, into the presence of her Savior, Jesus Christ on March 26, 2024. She was born December 16, 1935 in Pyongyang, Korea, the eldest daughter to her loving parents Ung-Soo Choi and Chung-Sook Kim.

Sang-Kyung was preceded in death by her parents and by her younger brother, Sang-Kook Choi. She is survived by her three loving children, Susan (John) Harness, Joanne (Alan) Stahura, and James Lee; her four grandchildren, Eva, Elsa, Rachel, and Rebekah; her great-grandson Oliver; her sister, Sang-Ran Choi; and three brothers, Sang-Jin Choi, Sang-Chul Choi, and Sang-Il Choi.

Leaving Pyongyang, she came first to Daegu and then to Seoul in 1948 with her family, experiencing hardship and loss in the events leading up to and during the Korean War; she attended Suhmoon Girls' School in Pyongyang. She briefly attended a high school in Daegu and then Seoul Capital Girls’ High School. She also attended Sookmyung Women’s University where she studied English Language and Literature and graduated in 1958.

She was the first of her family to come to the United States in 1964, first working in the Korea pavilion at the New York World’s Fair and later moving to Chicago where she worked at the Sun-Times newspaper, constantly taking on new challenges. She was a strong person and endured hardship and setbacks throughout her life with grit and determination. And she displayed the same grit in her final months as cancer took over.

Sang-Kyung (Jennie) was the longtime owner of Sauganash Cleaners on Chicago’s northwest side where she spoke fondly of her regular customers whom she considered her friends. She was passionate about reading, sewing, gardening, classical music and opera. She had a beautiful singing voice and was a member of Chicago Mission (Presbyterian) Church.

She will be greatly missed by all who knew her and loved her.

Visitation will be Saturday, April 13, 2024 from 9:30 am to 11:30 am at Oehler Funeral Home, 2099 Miner Street, Des Plaines, IL 60016, followed by a celebration of life service at 11:30 am.

최상경 성도 (제니 리, 88세, 시카고 거주) 님이 2024년 3월 26일 세상을 떠나 예수님의 품안에 안기셨습니다. 최상경님은 1935년 12월 16일 평양에서 사랑하는 부모님 최응수, 김정숙의 장녀로 태어났습니다. 한국전쟁 전후의 어려운 시기를 가족과 함께 겪으면서 1948년 서울에 왔습니다. 평양 서문공립여학교, 피난시 대구의 고등학교, 서울수도여고를 거쳐 숙명여자대학교 영어영문학과를 졸업 (1958년) 했습니다.

부모님과 남동생 (최상국)을 먼저 보내고, 사랑하는 세 자녀 수잔(존) 하네스, 조앤(앨런) 스타후라, 제임스 리와 네 손녀 이바, 엘사, 레이첼, 리베카, 증손자 올리버, 여동생 최상란, 남동생 최상진, 최상철, 최상일이 있습니다.

1964년 가족 중 처음으로 미국으로 건너온 그녀는 뉴욕세계박람회 한국관에서 근무했고, 이후 시카고로 이주하여 '썬 타임스' 신문사에서 타이피스트로 일하면서 끊임없이 새로운 도전을 했습니다. 투지와 결단력으로 일생의 어려움을 극복한 강인한 분이셨으며, 암 투병의 마지막 순간까지도 강인함을 보이셨습니다.

최상경 성도 (제니) 님은 시카고 북서부에 위치한 '소간내시 클리너스'를 운영하며, 단골 고객들과 교류를 통해 따뜻한 인간관계를 유지하며 사셨습니다. 그녀는 독서, 바느질, 식물 가꾸기, 클래식 음악과 오페라에 열정적이셨고, 노래할 때 그녀의 아름다운 목소리가 빛을 발했습니다.

최상경 성도 (제니) 님을 알고 사랑했던 모든 사람들이 그녀를 많이 그리워할 것입니다.
