Alta Darling Frey, age 91, of Ann Arbor, Michigan passed away on Thursday, July 15, 2021. Alta was born the daughter of Louis and Alta Sherwin on December 9, 1929 in Pinckney, Michigan. She was raised in Dexter, Michigan and attended the Dexter School System, graduating in 1948. After she graduated, she met and fell in love with Calvin Frey. They married in 1952 and, together, they raised their family at Frey Farms, Calvin's long time home and family farm. Alta lived there up until her death. Alta genuinely loved her family, especially her grandchildren. She was one of the best cooks and bakers and her family enjoyed many of her dishes, especially her famous fudge, pretzels, and angel food cake. In between cooking, baking, and helping on the farm, she also taught many children in the Ann Arbor and Dexter area to play the piano and the organ. Many of her students went on to become accomplished players, with some even winning musical competitions. Alta played the organ at various churches in the Ann Arbor and Dexter area, often bringing her grandchildren with her while she played. She was very proficient at crochet, and made several afghans for family and friends; practically everyone she ever knew has been warmed buy her loving afghan creations. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Calvin; and her daughter, Donna; as well as several brothers, sisters, and dear friends. She will be dearly missed by her son, Dale (Julie); son-in-law, Tim (Brenda); granddaughters, Michelle, Renee (Edison); as well as Noel (David), Shannon (Kevin), and 5 great grandchildren. Cremation will take place and a private family service will be held.
