We, Julie and Alex, would like to tell you about Jack Frost, my husband of 41 years, and my dad. We want to try in our own way to honor and celebrate Jack’s life! He was born in Center, Texas to Charles and Shirley (Roberts) Frost. He had a brother, Charles L. Frost, and a sister, Lana Jean (Frost) Johnson. His folks moved the family back to their hometown of St. Johns, Michigan when Jack was young.
Jack met Julie in St. Joseph, Michigan while working for the USDA Soil Conservation Service. They married in 1980 and moved back to Julie’s hometown, Dexter, MI. This is where home became home to Jack. He loved to sing, whistle, or hum every day and sang tenor/bass in our church choir. He could imitate so many voices and regional dialects and he carried on hilarious impromptu conversations with his brother-in-law, John.
He was a master tinkerer and could fix anything. The care he took in all the things he did, and his willingness to help anyone at the drop of a hat kept our list of projects fun and full. The pride Jack took showed through in every job he completed. He was a prolific tool collector and if a certain project needed a specific tool, he seemed to always be able to pull it out of his workshop. Jack had a Bachelor of Science from Eastern Michigan and made his career in CAD and drafting, working on layout designs from water/sewer/drainage projects to working in traffic and road design for MDOT, retiring on October 15th, 2020.
In 1980 we started an apple orchard on the Fyfe family farm, and called it The Frosty Apple. We worked together, learned together, and made mistakes together – always helping each other along the way. The orchard came to define us in a way, and truly was a big part of our life together as well as our lives with many of you!
Our son, Alex Frost, was born in 1992 and we adopted him in 1993. But the reality was, Jack adopted every baby he held. Jack was the best at playing with kids of all ages, helping to coach sports, building forts, and inventing things. He was always learning and always teaching; how to use tools and how to solve any problem, he passed on his knowledge and wisdom every chance he got. Whether he was watching birds with the rest of the family or throwing sticks for the family dogs, his love shown through onto everything around him.
Jack was very social. He visited Joe and Rosie’s for his coffee every morning, and never failed to find a reason to go to Hackneys to pick up hardware for our many projects. He was never too busy to stop and talk and joke around a bit with his friends, and he was friends with everyone. He loved to challenge himself with crossword puzzles, Jeopardy, cribbage, and Suduko. He loved to fish, spend time at Brocky Lake in the UP, ride his motorcycle and work in his wood shop. His most recent projects involved collecting wood from his friends and from around the farm to turn on his new Harvey lathe.
Jack was preceded in death by father Charles and mother Shirley, his brother Charles, his sister-in-law Dawn, and his nephew Greg. Jack is survived by his wife Julie, and son Alex, as well as numerous nephews, one niece, his godchildren, and many more extended family who brought a huge amount of joy to Jack’s life.
Jack was a big, strong man who gave the best bear hugs. He was jolly, humorous, and quick-witted. Jack made his unique name work for him wherever he went. He truly was an unforgettable man with an unforgettable name. Jack was the best husband, father, friend, and brother anyone could ever ask for.
He will be dearly missed by all. We love you, Jack.
