Raymond Carpenter

Raymond Lyle Carpenter, Jr., 83, Butch to some, Ray to most, of Dexter, MI, died 11-20-2019 quietly after a marathon battle with prostate cancer. He is survived by his wife of 61 years Kathryn (Kay) Kelley Carpenter, daughters Kelli (Michael) McNally, Kristine (Christopher) Sobczak, Karole (Greg) Schoepf, Julie (Paul) Dickey, and son Randy (Brenda) Carpenter. Ray has 11 grandchildren who loved him deeply and 3 very recent great-grandchildren. He is also survived by sisters Sharon (Jack) Spires Briggs and Sandy (Phil) Brothers and their families. Born on 11-05-1936 to Raymond and Dorothy Carpenter in Ann Arbor, Ray was raised and lived for years in Ypsilanti before moving to his wife's family's farm in Dexter. He retired after 30 years of service to AAA as an insurance salesman to become what his family fondly refers to as a gentleman farmer. He was an avid outdoorsman, gardener and tractor driver but what he loved most was hunting which he enjoyed since he was 14. He celebrated Opening Day as if it was a national holiday. He was an extremely thoughtful, kind and funny man who will be greatly missed by all who loved him. Visitation is scheduled for Tuesday, November 26 from 2:00-8:00 p.m. with a rosary service at 7:00 p.m. at The Hosmer-Muehlig Funeral Chapel, 3410 Broad St., Dexter, MI. His funeral mass will be Wednesday, November 27 at 11:00 a.m. with visitation at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph's Village Church , 3430 Dover, Dexter. In lieu of flowers Ray would love donations sent to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital at StJude.org.
