

He spent over 20 years in the Army; as a Peace Keeper in Cyprus and with NATO for four tours in Germany where he married his first wife, Marta Ingeborg and later they were stationed in Calgary and Petawawa. After he retired from the Army, he worked as a custodian at several Digby area schools and retired from there in 1993. While at the schools, he worked with special needs students and with Special Olympics. Doug was an avid reader, especially historical and war novels. He also loved taking nature pictures, watching war and western movies. He rarely spent a day when he didn’t listen to country music, especially the older artists and Blain Henshaw. Doug was a member of RCL Branch 22 also a member of the Digby & Area Lions Club; serving in many positions in each group.
Besides his parents he was predeceased by his daughter, Susan; his first wife, Inge; brothers, Bill, John, Nathan, Gordon, Thomas, Ellsworth, Garnet; sisters, Ida, Nina, Dorothy, Marjorie and Elizabeth. He is survived by his son, Stephen; his second wife Gerri; stepsons, Ron, Scott Boal; sister, Catherine; brother and sister-in-law Jon Oickle and Aggie Ross and many nieces and nephews. A special thank you to the doctors and nurses of the Yarmouth Regional and Digby General Hospitals for their loving care and dedication. A very special thank you to MaryAnn who has always been there for us for years.
Cremation has taken place and the funeral service will be 3 pm April 30, 2022 from Jayne’s Funeral Home, Digby. Pastor Mark Cress officiating. No flowers, please, but a gift in his memory may be given to the Digby & Area Lions Club towards the purchase of a guide dog for an autistic child.
