

Son of Clayton Denton Sr. and Susan (Manzer) Denton passed away at his residence in Halifax on March 27th, 2013. Besides his parents he was predeceased by sister, Elsie Gidney; brother, Clayton Denton Jr.; Brothers-in-law, Clifton Gidney and Willard Sherman; nieces, Sandra Sherman and Jill Denton; nephews, Larry Gidney and Barry Denton. He is survived by sister, Marjorie Sherman, Digby; brothers, Elwood (Iris), Digby; Stanley (Charlotte), Australia; Richard (Carol), Kingston; Rev. Gregory (Lynda), Halifax; many nieces and nephews.
Fred was born in Little River, Digby Co., where he received his early education. In 1947 he enrolled at Acadia University, where he earned the following degrees; Bachelor of Arts (Honours) and Master of Arts. Following Acadia University he enrolled with the RCN (Royal Canadian Navy) Regular Force Officer Training Plan, and continued his academia. First in 1955-56 at Mount Allison University then 1955-58 he studied toward a PhD while in Paris, France at Universite de Paris. During his service time with the RCN he served as an executive branch-training officer (specialist branch) 1958-1961. During this period with RCN he wore the ranks of Cadet, Sub- Lieutenant, and Lieutenant. He was a life-long student of the languages and acquired a working knowledge of seven and was highly fluent in French.
In 1961 he retired from the Navy and then took the position as Student Services Administrator at Sir George Williams University (Concordia) in Montreal. During that time he served as a Counsellor, an Assistant Director then an Acting Director. Residents & Students of Montreal will remember Fred as very engaging at work and on his ritual, daily walks through Westmount "Leafy Lansdowne" and Mount Royal. He was easily recognizable with his trademark brown then later silvery shoulder length hair and John Lennon style glasses. Upon his retirement, Fred returned to the family homestead in Little River, Nova Scotia where he resided until failing health made it necessary for his move to Halifax.
