Martin’s life revolved around his favourite passions and joys, including family, humour, his deep and lifelong love of music, any and all sports (especially baseball!), his love of cookies, coffee and chocolate and keeping busy as a skilled “jack of all trades”, which he put to use in his past property management work and in his last decades as a motel owner (a business that he and Phyllis took huge pride in). Most of all, though, his role of “Opa” to his 5 grandchildren was his biggest delight.
Martin is survived by his wife, Phyllis (Marshall) Vree; step-daughter, Lisa (Andrew) Rankin (Nova Scotia); step-son, Adam (Monika) Harte-Maxwell (Ontario); brothers, Ruud (Ellen) Vree (The Netherlands) and Thomas Vree (Ontario); sister, Laura Vree (Shawn Wilcox) (Ontario); 5 grandchildren, Liam, Bennett and Imogen Rankin and Chloe and Alice Harte-Maxwell as well as 2 nieces, Josie and Annie Wilcox (Ontario). Martin also cherished his in-laws, and is survived by his second mother Lorraine Marshall; siblings, Murray (Shirley), Larry (Marilyn) and Marilyn (Robert) and predeceased by George (Lynda).
A Celebration of Martin’s Life will be held for family and friends on May 18, 2024 at Jayne’s Funeral Home, Digby, from 3-5pm. This is a casual/business casual attire event. Bring a memory of Martin if you wish to share.
