Banks, Michael Laird, of Smith’s Cove Digby Co. passed away suddenly on May 30, 2021 at his home in Smith’s Cove. Michael was born on July 14, 1959 in Toronto, Ont. and was the son of Laird and Carol (Cornett) Banks of Smith’s Cove.

He was an associate member of the Smith’s Cove Fire Dept., where he volunteered his time. He had a strong interest in history, both his family and in the Digby area. He enjoyed meeting and talking hockey with the late Howard Dill, when he would take Richard to King’s Edgehill. He loved his granddaughters and enjoyed his time with them at the playground, on drives, walks, reading to them or watching hockey.

He will be greatly missed by his loving wife Valerie, son Richard, Parents , mother in law, Louise Potter and his two adored and beloved granddaughters Claire and Chole. Besides his parents, Laird and Carol Banks, Michael leaves behind his loving wife of 35 years, Valerie (Potter) Banks, son Richard (Melissa Meuse), Hebron; and granddaughters Claire and Chloe. Just learned today of Michael's passing! We were very saddened by this news. Peter, in particular, enjoyed conversations with him about hockey, of course. We know it is a very difficult time for the entire family and send our love.

I played pick up hockey with Michael some years ago. In later years would meet him and that great smile for a short hello. Then I met him at the arena while public skating with grand daughter. Always a pleasure. May his family get strength from their great memories of Michael.

Aunt Carol, Uncle Laird, Val, and Richard – We were so shocked and saddened to hear of Michaels sudden passing. We read through the many tributes online and he certainly had great impact on not only family and friends, but the entire community. It’s been a long time since we last saw Michael, but the comments reflect what we know of him as extraordinarily kind, caring and always there to lend a hand. He will be missed and our thoughts are with all of you. Greg, Andrea, Chris and Jocelyn

So sorry to hear of Michael’s passing. I taught Michael when he attended DRHS. I have many pleasant memories of Michael. He was a very determined and conscientious young man. I remember that nothing brought Michael more joy than completing his work regardless of how long it took him. He was indeed an example to others in the class and was a very positive influence on all of us. Most of all I remember his smile. Meeting Michael many years later I was surprised that he remembered me and I was touched by how proud he was of his wife and his son Richard. Digby / Smiths Cove has lost one of their finest citizens.
My sincere condolences to Carol, Laird, Valerie and Richard.
