Robert "Bob" Frederick Handspiker

Robert "Bob" Handspiker of Digby, NS passed March 26, 2026 in Yarmouth Hospital. He was predeceased by his parents Arthur "Buster" Handspiker and Flossie (Dukeshire); brother, Donald; wives, Wanda (VanTassell) and Verna George and feline best friend Ricki.

He is survived by brother, Larry Handspiker of Ontario; dearest cousin, Ron VanTassell of Digby as well as daughter, Kim (Williams) with her husband Andy of Berwick. He had grandchildren, Mitchell Williams, Shayla Adams, Dominic Larkin; great grandchildren Finn Williams, Dominque Wheeler, Dorian & Devon Gaudet and Tamara & Cali Lynn Larkin.

From his marriage to Verna George, he enjoyed time with her daughters, Sharon, Wendy, Tammy, Karen, Nancy and their families. He also had another lovely companion in his life, Tanya Wood of Digby, who in his last year brought him great joy.

Bob proudly served his country for 27 years in the Royal Canadian Navy Medical Branch, retiring as a Chief Petty Officer. Following his military career, he continued his dedication to community and service as a 25-year veteran firefighter with the Digby Volunteer Fire Department. His commitment to his community extended further through two terms as a Digby Town Councilor and his role as Director of Environmental Services at Digby General Hospital. He also served as a consultant for medical facilities throughout the province.

A proud member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Bob valued camaraderie and service above all. He had a deep love for golf, volunteering with the East Coast Golf Classic, and found great joy spending time at the cottage each summer surrounded by friends and family.

His final care is with Jayne’s Funeral Home, Digby. A funeral service will be held at the Digby Baptist Church on April 7th at 2pm. Donations would be appreciated to your local animal shelter, the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Digby Fire Department.

Bob will be remembered for his dedication to service, his strong sense of community, and the lasting impact he made on all who knew him.
