

Harold "Brooks" Schaffer was born in Kingsburg, CA, on April 16, 1923. He went to Kingsburg schools, graduated from Kingsburg High School, and attended Fresno State College. Brooks worked in the Richmond Ship Yards prior to entering the service. In World War II, he served in the First Army known as the "Big Red One" and landed on June 5, 1944, D. Day, at Omaha Beach. Afterwards he went through France, Belgium, and Germany, ending with the Battle of the Bulge. He was prepared to go to the Pacific theater of war when the Atomic bomb was dropped. Returning home, Brooks attended the University of the Pacific. Then he joined the family lumber business. In 1951, the family purchased Dinuba Lumber Company and he moved to Dinuba, CA, where he worked for 66 years. He met his future wife, Patricia Wynne, while on a ski trip at Badger Pass. They were married 64 years. There were three children born of this union, Karen Wynne, Brooks William, and James Bradley. Brooks was active in the Chamber of Commerce and served two terms as president. He was a member of Rotary with over 50 years of perfect attendance, served on the board and was president. He was a Grand Marshal of the Raisin Day Parade. Brooks was a charter member of Kings River Golf & Country Club and served on the first board of directors and later as president. Brooks enjoyed sailing and summers at Huntington Lake, fishing, golfing, working at Dinuba Lumber, and talking with people wherever he went. Brooks was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Florence; brothers, Stanley Schaffer, Charles Schaffer and wife Eileen; daughter, Karen Weaver; and his favorite dogs, Bonzo and Babe. He is survived by his wife Patricia; son, Brooks William and wife Nina; son, James and wife Ingrid; and grandchildren, Christa and Spencer. A Memorial Service will be held at Dinuba Presbyterian Church on Saturday, July 15, 2017, at 11:00 a.m.
