
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 1, 2010 at Byrd Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Tim Willis and Rev. Ray Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Hill Cemetery with Byrd Funeral Home on West Main Street directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 until 8 p.m. on Tuesday. At other times the family will be at the home of Robert and Kathy McKnight Waters, 1213 Scenic View Drive, Dothan. Flowers are being accepted or memorials may be made to Ridgecrest Baptist Church, “Building Fund”, 1231 Fortner Street, Dothan, AL, 36301.
Mr. McKnight was born November 13, 1928, in Henry County, Alabama and lived the early years of his life there. He was a veteran of the Korean War having served in the U. S. Army. Following his discharge, he married Sarah Katherine Roney in 1952. He resided in Abbeville for a short time and in 1954 moved to Dothan where he was employed with Dothan Glass Co. until 1972. He then owned and operated Commercial Glass Co. until his retirement in 1999. Mr. McKnight enjoyed woodworking and was a member of the Dothan Elks Lodge. He was also a member of Ridgecrest Baptist Church and the Alton Cantrell Sunday School Class.
Mr. McKnight is predeceased by his parents Tullis and Mary McKnight, a sister, Jeanette Barnette and a brother, George McKnight.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Sarah Roney McKnight of Dothan; two daughters, Kathy Waters (Robert) of Dothan and Karan Mason (Ron) of Tallahassee, FL; four grandchildren, Brian Waters of Tuscaloosa, Jennifer Waters of Dothan, Trevor Mason and Kylie Katherine Mason, both of Tallahassee, FL; a brother, S. E. “Pete” McKnight (Hilda) of Eufaula; several nieces and nephews and other extended family members also survive.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Hollis Kirkland, J. T. Radney, Keith Beasley, Brian Waters, Trevor Mason, Will Ethridge, John Stephens and Richard Holley.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Alton Cantrell Sunday School Class.
