

Memorial services will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church with Dr. James B. Sanders officiating and Byrd Funeral Home on West Main Street directing. The family will receive friends at the church in the church parlor from 9:30 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. on Thursday.
Mr. Flowers was born August 21, 1924 to Francis Asbury and Janie Farmer Flowers. He was raised in Dothan and was a 1941 graduate of Dothan High School. He attended Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force. He was a veteran of World War II where he was a navigator on a B-24 bomber in Europe.
After his discharge from the U.S. Air Force in 1945, Mr. Flowers began his career with the Dothan Bank and Trust Company, now Regions Bank. He eventually became President and Chief Executive Officer before retiring on December 31, 1986.
Mr. Flowers was very active in community affairs. He was president and drive chairman of the United Way on two separate occasions. He was a member of the Houston Love Memorial Library Board for 54 years, serving as its chairman for 35 years. He was the president of the Chamber of Commerce for several terms. He also served as chairman of the Salvation Army Advisory Board, as well as Houston County Chairman of the American Lung Association. He was a Paul Harris Fellow and elected as Dothan’s Man of the Year in 1970.
Mr. Flowers served on the Board of Trustees of Birmingham Southern College. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Haven for 25 years and a longtime member of the Hawk-Houston Boys Club.
At the time of his death, Mr. Flowers was chairman of the Dothan Industrial Development Board. He was a voluntary teacher in the Literacy Program in Dothan for more than 21 years having tutored over 2,400 students on a one-on-one basis helping them to pass the GED examination.
Mr. Flowers was a member of First United Methodist Church in Dothan. He was a member of the United Methodist Foundation Board of Directors and served as chairman of the administrative board for more than 40 years. He taught two different Sunday School classes for over 20 years and served as a lay speaker in the Methodist Church for 40 years.
Mr. Flowers tried to live the beliefs and values he imparted to others. He was kind and thoughtful and assisted many people from all walks of life on numerous occasions in many different ways.
Mr. Flowers enjoyed playing golf from the age of 12 until his last illness. In fact, he was an excellent golfer in his prime, winning numerous tournaments throughout the Wiregrass area. He truly loved the game. He also enjoyed walking and reading.
He is preceded in death by his youngest son, Bill Flowers, who died earlier this year.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Janet Flowers; his son, Berry Flowers; Bill’s wife, Julie Flowers, their children and his grandchildren, Blair Flowers, Ellen Flowers and Janie Flowers, all of Dothan.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the “In Christ Name Fund” at the First United Methodist Church, 1380 W. Main Street, Dothan, AL, 36303.
