Gerald O'Neal Hicks, cherished father, friend, and devoted Christian, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, April 3rd, 2023, at the age of 70. Gerald led a life abundant in service, kindness, and unwavering commitment to those around him.
Born in Sanford, North Carolina, on December 11th, 1952, Gerald was the son of the late Henry Thomas Hicks and Zelda Reid O'Neal Hicks. Youngest of three siblings, he was boisterous and loved exploring. He was a proud boy scout and loved nature. He graduated from William G Enloe High School, Raleigh, NC in 1970. The years following he spent time traveling around, appreciating unique places in the world that God created.
As an entrepreneur, Gerald identified an opportunity when he noticed companies discarding valuable equipment instead of repairing it. This insight led him to establish Newco Enterprises, where he created a nurturing work environment and provided numerous opportunities. Gerald remained at the helm until his retirement, growing the company to over 30 employees.
Apart from his professional accomplishments, Gerald was an active member of Cross Roads Church in Douglasville, GA. He contributed significantly to the church's thrift store, dedicating his time and energy to serve both the church and the community.
Gerald will be lovingly remembered as a caring father, grandfather, and friend. He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Jesse and Heather Hicks, and Joshua and Charis Hicks of Huntsville, Alabama; grandchildren, Jameson Thomas Hicks and Elodie Grace Hicks; brother and sister-in-law, Henry "Tom" and Linda Hicks, sister and brother-in-law, Betsy Hicks and William Lowry, II; and the mother of his children, Nancy Elaine Hicks.
A celebration of Gerald's life will take place at Whitley-Garner at Rosehaven Funeral Home in Douglasville, GA, on April 15th, 2023. Public viewing will be held at 10 a.m. with the service following at 11 a.m.
Gerald's legacy of compassion and dedication will remain in the hearts of all who knew him, and his impact on those around him through overflowing generosity will remain in our hearts forever.
