Harry is survived by his wife Sheila, daughters Carrie (Daryk) Cochran, Kathryn (Daniel) Treuman, Leigh Anne (Buddy) Orol, step-daughters Toni (Ethan) Johnson, Brandie (Devin) Harris and 10 grandchildren. Harry is also survived by his siblings, Cindy (Dan) Minish, Chuck (Lydia) Palmer, and Gene (Gina) Hayes, and many nieces and nephews.
Harry was preceded in death by his mother Ouida Hayes, father Huey Palmer Sr, and stepfather Donald Hayes.
After living in France and Germany as a young boy, Harry was raised in Douglas County Georgia.
In 1980 Harry began working at Delta Air Lines as a baggage handler. Through his leadership, mechanical and technical aptitude, and the right amount of common sense, Harry worked his way up to the position of Senior Manager in the IT Department. Harry loved his job and the people he worked with, and retired from Delta Air Lines in 2018 after 38 years of dedicated service.
Harry was a gifted outdoorsman who felt most at home in the woods or on the water. He eagerly shared his passion, experience, and knowledge with both young and old. Harry felt closest with The Lord when watching the sunrise over a still lake, taking in a Gulf Coast sunset, or breathing in the crisp early morning air of the deer woods.
For a whole generation of young football, baseball, and softball players in Douglas and Paulding Counties, Harry was better known as “Coach Harry.” Although the love of competition drew Harry to coach, it was the opportunity to invest in the next generation that was most fulfilling.
Gathering with others and creating community came naturally to Harry. He kindled lifelong friendships and prided himself on bringing folks together. This was especially true with his “Buddy-Roes,” a group of close friends with whom Harry would share an annual lake gathering filled with laughter, great food, and fellowship.
Harry’s grandchildren, Lucas, Shaelyne, Hayes, Libby, Abel, Jase, Spencer, Palmer, Lena, and Kathryn Claire, were his pride and joy. Known lovingly as “Paw Paw”; Harry had the ability to make the ordinary extraordinary and bring joy to their everyday moments.
Harry loved spending time in Eastpoint, Florida with his wife Sheila. They were looking forward to creating a place where family and friends could gather.
Harry was a lover of music, a good pun (& even bad ones), Alabama Football and The Andy Griffith Show. He led a blessed life, he lived it fully and never shied from its challenges. Harry was a husband, a father, a grandfather, a brother, and a son. He was a friend, a coach, a mentor, a patriot, and a man of great personal faith and conviction. All those who knew Harry were blessed to have been a part of his life.
