

Joan Fitzsimmons Alford, of Douglasville, GA, passed away at home Tuesday, May 27, 2014. She was born in Buchanan, GA. She received Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the University of Texas School of Nursing. She was employed as a Gerontological Nurse Practitioner at Agape Hospice Care, and was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Douglasville, and an avid college and professional sports fan. Mrs. Alford was preceded in death by her husband, Charles R. “Chuck” Alford; her parents, Joe and Lula Belle Manning; sisters, Madolyn Harrison and Sarah Manning; brothers, Howard Manning and Bill Manning; and brothers-in-law, James Harrison and Buran Robinson. She is survived by her sons, Richard Kilgore of Tucker, GA, Ed Kilgore and wife Dawn Wilson of Pacific Grove, CA; sisters, Sylvia Robinson and husband Willard, Sandra Walker and husband June, and Carol Patterson and husband Barry; several sisters- and brothers-in-law; and numerous cousins, nephews and nieces. The family will receive friends at First Presbyterian Church of Douglasville on Sunday, June 1, 2014 from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM. A memorial service will follow at 2:00 PM in the church chapel with Elder Jane Hubbard and Reverend Dr. Sandy Fox officiating. Mrs. Alford’s cremains will be interred with those of her late husband, Chuck, at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, GA. Joan will be remembered by her friends, family and colleagues as a beautiful, generous and intelligent soul who loved conversation and laughter, and hated nothing other than injustice. The family has asked that in lieu of flowers donations be made in her memory to the medical mission work of the First Presbyterian Church of Douglasville.
