Waveney was a wonderful woman that was loved, is missed, and will always be cherished. She was the glove of support to the hand of Percy her husband. She encouraged education as the means to transcend poverty, while Percy encouraged militarism by burning hot fire on the lazy and the sluggard. She was the daughter of Joseph, being a fruitful tree from which sprung thirteen sprouts one being a branch within a branch. And over each branch did Percy place a shade being a carpenter among many other skills, to which the house he built to shelter his family in Costello Scheme lot 67 Georgetown, Guyana, bears testimony to this day.
She was raised in the precinct of Kitty from whence came L.F.S. Burnham, founder of the co-operative Republic of Guyana of whom she was a revolutionary supporter of his land to the tiller policy and responded to his call for people of African descent to return to the land and with the help of her son Derrick, teacher McKenzie, acquired 10 acres of land at Silverhill, Guyana, developed a farm.
Being an ardent advocate of the Christian concept of proper marriage and the importance of its roll towards engendering a fit and proper society, the records show, that the offspring of Waveney and Percy Mckenzie were all thirteen of them properly married. Waveney presided over all squabbles among siblings, encouraged unity and co-operation, and was never prepared to renounce her bad apple for nobody’s good ones! Not only did she believe that the family chain was strong as it’s weakest link, but also encouraged them to strive for strength and betterment mentally, physically, and to be industrious and self-sufficient as often, while at work be it in janitorial services, she would have a little tuck shop at her house or at the workplace.
Today, she lies before us the matriarch of the family having surpassed the biblical quota of three score years and ten; and by reason of strength, four scores, to attain ninety years and three. Every step we take in life is one step closer to our death regardless if it’s a quick march or a slow one, but one end awaits us all; an end which is not brought forward, nor can it be shifted away from the day and time appointed.
Our dear mother’s time of rest has come till the day comes when the trumpet will be blown, and by the grace and mercy of God Almighty, she is given her book of deeds in her right hand, and invited to enter the abode of bliss that awaits all who worshipped their Lord, patiently doing good in this world towards their family, humanity, and all of the creation of God Almighty.
In the name of God almighty, the most merciful; may the good that Mama Waveney did during her sojourn in this world, glorified God. May almighty God grant her forgiveness for mistakes unknowingly and knowingly committed. Grant her the account in her right hand with a smile on the Lord’s face. And permit her to enter the PARADISE through any of its gates. And let us all say bless the Lord! Oh my soul…And blessed be his glorious Kingdom for evermore. Amen!!!
