Born in Detroit, MI to William and Charlotte Galbraith. Wendell attended Southeastern High School, graduated, and was drafted into the military in March, 1943. He proudly served in the USAAF 15th Air Force based in Italy during WWII, and flew 24 missions as a B-24 radio operator before his plane was shot down on a bombing run over Vienna. He parachuted into the burning city, breaking his leg upon landing, for which he received the Purple Heart. He was captured by the Germans and made a Prisoner of War. Upon returning to Michigan after the war, Wendell attended Wayne State University in Detroit, where he met his wife to be, Shirley. They wed on October 1, 1948, and were married 66 years. Wendell and Shirley raised a family in St. Clair Shores, MI and had two children: Scott, who now lives in Zephyrhills, FL, and Laurie, who now lives in Villa Rica, GA. Wendell spent most of his career working for the Chrysler Corporation, and retired in 1980. He enjoyed travel, golf, and bowling, and bowled into his 90’s. Wendell also leaves his special feline friend and constant companion, Joey.
There will be no service in Georgia. He will be buried at the Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, MI.
