It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of David D. Simkins, 83, U.S. Navy Veteran, on Thursday, January 18, 2024, in Dublin, Ohio. David was born March 20, 1940, Hillsboro, Ohio, and is preceded in death by his beloved mother, Velma L. White (Fender) and stepfather Herschel White. He is survived by his devoted wife of 59 years, Patricia, whom he loved deeply; his daughter Deborah Darlene (Steve) Varga and their children Stephanie, Benjamin, and Samuel Varga; his sister, Charlotte Henderson and her children Susan (Joe) Henderson and David (Linda) Henderson. David graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1958 and enlisted in the Navy soon after graduation. He worked as a jet aircraft servicer aboard the USS Saratoga during the Vietnam War where he earned the good conduct medal for service. He completed his active-duty Naval service with an assignment he enjoyed immensely as personal chauffeur for an admiral in Memphis. He remained in the Naval reserves for many years. He was commissioned a Kentucky Colonel in 1975. Kentucky Colonel is the highest title of honor bestowed by the Commonwealth of Kentucky and is awarded by the governor of Kentucky to individuals for noteworthy accomplishments, contributions to civil society, remarkable deeds, or outstanding service to the community, state, or a nation. Dave became a quality control specialist for the U.S. Government where his eye for detail, ability to tell it like it is, and character to stand by the truth served him well and he retired from the Department of Defense in 1995.
Known for his bubbly and personable nature, Dave had an unparalleled ability to light up any room he entered. He was a happy-go-lucky individual who found joy in the smallest of things, and he loved to share this joy with others. One of his unique traits was his affinity—and talent--for whistling. He would whistle (loudly) everywhere he went. He was even asked to exercise his talent and accompany a professional singer in Tennessee but was too humble to oblige. His contagious happiness spread through the melodies he whistled, touching the hearts of people around him.
Dave's admirable character was evidenced by his strong belief in standing up for what was right, even in the face of adversity. His philosophy was to endeavor to remain happy and spread happiness, a lesson he embodied every day of his life. His loved ones will remember him by these teachings he was so passionate about.
Further testament to his character was his service as a Navy veteran, where he played a significant role in the Vietnam conflict. His dedication and bravery on the flight deck of a Naval aircraft carrier during these times were a testament to the kind of man he was.
Dave's exuberant spirit, ability to embellish a story, infectious laugh, and unwavering kindness made a deep and lasting impact on everyone who had the fortune to know him. His enduring legacy is one of perseverance, hard work and heartfelt compassion. He was the embodiment of a big-hearted individual¬. He will be deeply missed, yet his spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
A celebration of life visitation will be held in Dave’s honor beginning at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, January 25th , with a service led by Pastor JD Davis, and luncheon to follow, at Dublin Baptist Church in Dublin, Ohio. A graveside service will be held on Friday, January 26th at Hillsboro Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, we invite you to make a donation in his honor to Alzheimer’s/Dementia research at www.alz.org, the Disabled American Veterans (or other Veteran agency), or your local humane society.
