

Elmer “Gil” Gilbertson, 97, passed away on June 9, 2022. He was born on August 15, 1924 in Mankato, Minnesota to the late Blanche and Ole Gilbertson. Gil is preceded in death by his wife and best friend of 62 years Evelyn.
He is survived by three daughters, Gail (Pat) Quinn, Lynn (Bill) Veeck and Bonnie Gilbertson. Elmer is also survived by his grandchildren Michael (Lauren) and Kristen Cordova, Brian (Samantha) and Christopher (Holly) Veeck; great-grandchildren Lyla Grace and Henry Veeck, Aly and Austin Swearingen; as well as relatives, Lynn and Dean Fiegel; and close friends, Birdie and Stan. Elmer is preceded in death by his wife Evelyn and brother, Robert “Buddy” Gilbertson.
To know Gil you must know of his time in the United States Army and the honor he held for serving his country. At 17 he tried to enlist in the Army was instructed he was not old enough and to come back once he turned 18. Two weeks after his 18th birthday he enlisted on September 4, 1942. Gil joined the famous 101st Airborne Division 506 I Co P.I.R. and jumped on D-Day, his drop zone was behind Utah Beach and also jumped in the Operation Market Garden. He was proud to earn his wings and be part of the parachute infantry. Gil would have stayed a lifetime in the United States Army but was wounded and was honorably discharged. He earned his Purple Heart and Bronze Star and many others. After his time in the military Gil married Evelyn at the age of 25 and went on to become a top salesperson in the sales industry. Everyone knew Gil for being a jokester and being one of the funniest guys you will ever meet.
Gil’s family would like to especially thank the staff at The Sanctuary at Tuttle Crossing for their kindness and care.
Visitation will Thursday June 16 from 10 am to 12 noon at SCHOEDINGER DUBLIN, 5980 Perimeter Dr. Dublin, OH 43017 where funeral service will be held 12 noon on Thursday June 16, with interment to follow at Kingwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Honor Flight.
