   My sincere condolences to you re Joyce's passing.  I miss her smile and seeing her.  She enjoyed life and her family, esp Eric her husband.  I knew her thru OLP Parish and our PSR program.

My sisters and I consider ourselves extremely fortunate to have had Mama Joyce as our grandmother. She was joyful and quick to laugh, warm, welcoming and loved talking to people; she always had a story to tell. My sisters and I will remember her in the stories the family retell, which we heard from her first.

She was a great sport, doing the chicken dance with us and swimming with us as children, and getting involved in party games. My two-year-old son, Arlo, never met her in person, but we used to FaceTime, and they would roar at each other (amongst a myriad of other animal sounds!). Now, when he hears her name, he roars at her - his own way of remembering her.

Mama Joyce was a fantastic cook, her dishes an expression of her love and care, and often a welcome reminder to my sisters and me of our Goan heritage. She always encouraged us to have a second (and third and fourth!) helping. We will remember her every time we cook using one of her recipes.

She loved art, and loved music, and played the piano and sang. My dad, sisters and I inherited this passion for music. When we visited her every summer, we loved gathering around the piano and singing.  We will remember her when we gather around the piano at home. 

Not only was Mama Joyce a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, she also had wonderful relationships with her siblings. She showed my sisters and me what it means to be truly connected to family, and we will remember her in the way we care for and foster our close relationships with each other.

We will remember her both in these quiet moments in our daily lives, and in the big moments, always.

Every summer, my sisters, Kirsty and Annabelle, and I would travel to Ohio with our parents to visit Mama Joyce and Papa Eric. Those holidays became the backdrop to so many of our happiest childhood memories.

We remember them meeting us at the airport gate, smiling and waving as we came through. The drive back always took us along the “rollercoaster road” near their house - a hilly stretch that made our stomachs turn and had us laughing every time.

Garden Road was full of warmth, life and chaos, with all of us staying there together with our cousins. We made kulfi (though there was usually a bit less than the recipe called for, thanks to our generous “taste tests” of the condensed milk). We’d sit on the swinging bench on the front porch, or find a quiet moment in the sunroom; play table tennis in the basement, take turns on the piano, go on endless shopping trips, and enjoy the most delicious food - potato chops, green chutney, prawn curry, and plenty of sweet treats.

In 2013, I spent a month with Mama J in Ohio. We went to a seniors’ line dancing class every week, and worked on a project together - sorting through Papa Eric’s old letters between his grandfather and father. That quiet time with her was thoughtful, funny, and full of the small moments that stay with you.

Mama Joyce had a natural charm, a brilliant sense of humour, and a deep love for the piano/singing and for family. She was full of laughter and warmth—always ready with a laughing-until-you-cry story, a tune, or a hug. I see so much of her in my dad—her zest for life, good humour, passion for music with family at the core.

She was the heart of so many treasured summer moments. We miss her deeply, but we carry her with us always.

Dear Avit and Reynald,

Joyce was my first cousin, and we remember her as a warm and fun-loving person. We have vivid memories of Joyce and Eric visiting our homes in Sanquelim, Mapusa, and Assagao, occasions always filled with lively conversations and laughter.

She was one of my mum’s favourite nieces.
We pray that her soul rests in eternal peace.
