Laurie was born on August 3, 1958 in Waterbury, Connecticut to Frederick and Sue Fusco. When Laurie was a young girl, the family moved to Medina, Ohio. Though she briefly lived other places, Laurie spent the majority of her life in the Akron area, and moved to Dublin, Ohio to be closer to her family last year.
Laurie was a fierce protector of her family, who she loved beyond measure. She was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her sons Steven (Michelle) Umaña, John (Mikaela Marshall) Kipp; her granddaughter Ariella, pets Lulu, Dahlia, Rhea, Max, and Melo; brother Jerald (Brenda) Fusco; nieces, nephew, and many loved ones.
Laurie was a force of nature and moved any obstacle that dared stand in her way. She was an avid animal lover, raising many dogs, cats, birds, horses and a goat, and approved all her sons’ requests for various reptiles throughout their childhoods. She was known for her many Italian specialities, and her infamous chocolate pie, chocolate chip cookies, and chocolate cake. She loved dance, fitness, and was a mime in her 20s. She remained devoted to her Catholic faith.
Her careers were dedicated to serving others, including as a nurse and social worker. In recent years, she became a scientist at Boston Scientific, quickly becoming known as a savvy businesswoman and well-loved leader. She continued working until the very end, not allowing her diagnosis to hinder her. Laurie’s work successes were a great source of pride for her.
But she always said that her greatest accomplishment and legacy were her two boys, Steven and John. She raised them to be strong, intelligent, and caring men, who she talked to every day. She became a mom to Michelle, who she lovingly referred to as one of her “three kids.” Laurie’s favorite role was Grammie to Ariella, and their special bond was immediate.
Laurie will live on through all those who knew her and loved her, and she will be deeply missed.
A visitation will be held at St. Hilary Church, 2750 Market Street, Fairlawn, Ohio, 44333 on Saturday, February 1 at 10:00AM. A funeral service will follow at 11:00AM, also at St. Hilary.
Contributions in Laurie’s memory may be made to Victory Gallop (victorygallop.org).
