One of five boys, he was born in Cleveland, Ohio where he and Pauline met and became High School Sweethearts at Mayfield High School.
Rick was a lifelong Buckeye fan after earning a Bachelor of Science degree from The Ohio State University in 1972. His dedication to his career led him from sales to an executive position in IBP, a national meat production and distribution company. As his career and responsibilities grew, so did his family. His career moved his family from Ohio to Maine, Maryland, and ultimately to Worthington, Ohio where Rick and Pauline raised their two children, Monica and Nick. Rick left corporate life to become a long-time local business leader in Worthington as the second proprietor of Ryan’s IGA. He took great pride in being an active participant and member of the community through his support of the local schools and other civic causes.
Rick had many passions, loves and hobbies throughout his life. One of those, which began during his family’s time living in Maine, was walking along the beach looking for the perfect piece of sea glass. Traveling to Maine every summer with his family led to a lifetime of memories in The Pine Tree State, where his family vacations. Rick loved dogs of all sizes; from the Great Danes he and Pauline had for years, to his ever-present companion Lucy who was always by his side. From the time he started driving, cars were a central part of Rick’s life. From building small scale models to collecting and working on the real thing, his passion for vehicles of all shapes and sizes fulfilled him. He was very active in the local car community and could often be found winning awards at local car shows.
Despite these many loves and passions, his deepest love was for his family. It was the honor of his life to watch his children, and then grandchildren, grow up and do what they love. In recent years he could be found at fields and school events cheering them on.
Rick is survived by his loving wife, Pauline; daughter Monica (Patrick) Tyler, and their children Graham, Hadley, and Caroline; son Nick (Maria) Nemecek, and their daughter Grace; brothers Fred (Karen), Jim (Debbie) and David; as well as several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Betty, and brother Allen.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, at 2:00pm at Schoedinger Dublin, 5980 Perimeter Drive Dublin, Ohio 43017. A reception will follow the funeral service until 5:00 pm.
