

He was born in Varanasi (Banares) in 1938 to Shailendra Nath Chatterji and Shanti Chatterji. He lived in Varanasi, Prayag (Allahabad) and Kolkata (Calcutta) and enjoyed playing soccer as a child and young man. Sujit graduated from Banares Hindu University before immigrating to the United States in 1961, earning a Ph.D. in Pharmacology from The Ohio State University in 1971. He became a United States Citizen in 1973.
Throughout his life, Sujit was a passionate advocate for scientific truth and advancement, human and animal rights, and environmental conservation, and greatly enjoyed gardening, travel, time with family, and soccer and tennis. He is remembered and will be greatly missed by friends and family for his gentle nature, warmth, patience, kindness, intellect and integrity.
Sujit is survived by his wife, Sharon Kay Chatterji, sister Pratima Mukherji, sons Shourov Keith Chatterji and Shagor Kent Chatterji, and grandchildren Anna Shanti Chatterji, Owen Connor Chatterji, Aidan Miller Chatterji and Kamran Ehsan Chatterji.
