Dorothy was born on March 23, 1921 in West Duluth to August and Mary Viergutz. Her parents were of German and Irish descent. Dorothy attended Duluth Denfeld High School and was a graduate of Beauty Cosmetology School, with a Manager/Operator license. She worked at the Klearflax Linen Loom during World War II after which she was a stay at home Mom for many years. When she returned to work, she was a Seamstress at Nopeming Health Facility for 17 years.
Dorothy married Orville “Jake” Jacobson on June 27, 1942 in Good Shepherd Catholic Church and they moved into her grandmother’s home in Gary-New Duluth after Jake came home from the Navy after WW II. They were married 43 years when Jake passed away suddenly in September, 1984.
Dorothy loved her family and friends. She was a great short order cook and nothing made her happier than if you visited and she could put some food on the table.
Dorothy was active in St. Elizabeth’s Church, Slovenian Women’s Union Branch 33, community and social organizations, including the American Legion #71, VFW Auxiliary #6320, and TOPS (Do-Drops). She was always involved in activities with her children and more recently, followed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s education and sports including soccer, football, lacrosse, volleyball, hockey and baseball.
She was a very creative person. Her many hobbies included figurine painting, flower arranging, cake and table decorating for weddings, anniversaries and birthdays, gardening (big gardens in the early years), ceramics, sewing, crocheting, knitting and baking, especially cardamom bread in recent years. She also enjoyed camping in the travel trailer with family and friends.
Dorothy was a fun-loving person who was always thinking about others and doing special things for them. At Christmas time, she played Santa Claus and was a Clown in many parades. She loved traveling and made many trips to Virginia, Missouri, California, and Florida to visit family and friends. None of the trips surpassed her Hawaii trip with husband, Jake, in 1984. It was the realization of a life-long dream and they shared it with special friends.
In addition to her husband, Jake, and her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by son-in law, Gregory Strand; great-grandchildren, Matthew and Michael Traver and Lawson Strand; seven siblings – brothers Joseph , August, Raymond, and Robert; sisters- Violet Marquardt, Wilhelmina “Billie” Kauppi, and Genevieve Johnson.
Dorothy is survived by her four children: James (Carol) Jacobson, St. Charles, MO; Judith (Larry) Chambers, Stillwater, MN; Mary Beth (Gregory) Strand, Duluth, MN; and Richard (Cindy) Jacobson, Gainesville, VA; seven grandchildren: Jody (Todd) Buus, Michele (Bryant) Annala, Jeffrey (Holly) Jacobson, Alicia Strand Sebok, Kenneth Strand, Jessica Jacobson, Sara Jacobson; eleven great-grandchildren: Cody and Kelci Buus, Jason Traver, Jared and Jayme Stauffenecker, Jenna, Austin and Shaunna Jacobson, Sorin and Talen Sebok, Brayden Strand and one great-great grandchild, Brantley Jacobson; sister-in-law Shirley (Raymond) Viergutz; nieces, nephews and dear friends.
