Robert was born in Chicago, IL in December of 1947 to Carl and Goldie Berquist.
He graduated from Chicago Vocational High School in 1966 and attended the University of Illinois Chicago Campus where he received a Bachelor’s of Architecture in 1970. Robert moved from Chicago to Duluth in 1971 where he worked for construction and architectural firms until joining and becoming a partner of Larson, Harvala & Berquist Engineers and Architects (LHB). Robert started his own architectural firm, Robert A. Berquist , Architect –PA, in 1989. He has left a positive influence on Duluth by designing many homes and projects in the area, and most notably the transformation of Canal Park with his architectural vision and talent over the last 40 years.
On December 19, 1993 he was joined in marriage to his beloved, Jody A. Berger, at First Lutheran Church in Duluth after a 4 year courtship. Together they built their home in Duluth and lived with their family of many pets. Robert’s joy other than loving and caring for his family and pets included riding his motorcycle, Hungarian cooking, home improvement projects, planting grapes, painting, drawing, hiking, traveling, laughing with friends, packing heat and a great cigar. Robert was an involved member of Trinity Lutheran Church and had a very strong faith in our Lord.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one grandson, Henry Bruckelmyer.
Robert is survived by his wife Jody of 20 years; seven pets, Joey, Ava, Ike, Hallie, Sophie, Tiszta & Arthur; three beautiful daughters that he loved dearly, Heidi (Harold) Peck of Scappoose, Oregon, Mae (Dave) Chase of Phoenix, Arizona, and Greta (Lance) Bruckelmyer of Hamburg, Minnesota; eight grandchildren, Joshua, Lydia, Ava, Lonnie, Simon, Gordon, Teddy and Goldie; and countless loving friends.
The family wishes to sincerely thank the Grand County Search & Rescue and Grand County Sheriff’s office for their immense effort in locating Robert so we could bring him home to say goodbye.
