Capt. (retired) CD3 Frederick Garry Mills Jr. left us peacefully on August 30, 2013 at Cowichan District Hospital in Duncan, but not to worry he booked a tee-time with his Dad for his next round of golf.
He was born on November 7, 1936 in Islay, Alberta to Frederick Samuel and Joan Mills. The Mills family moved to Cowichan Station in 1937, then to Roome Road followed by Tulare Drive where they called home for the rest of their life time.
In 1952 he started his Army career and was one of the youngest Sapper apprentices. Through his distinguished career he served in various locations throughout Canada and had several deployments to Europe and the Middle East (Golan Heights and Gaza Strip). Fred was a true leader, who was recognized on several occasions for his professionalism and dedication.
In 1985 Fred retired from the Canadian Armed Forces as a Captain and moved to his home on Tulare Drive and watched over his parents till they passed.
His past times included golf, gardening, fishing, and enjoying the love that friends and family offered him. He was an extremely popular member of the Cowichan Golf and Country Club where he was known for his fantastic short game and let’s not forget his unforgettable wit. He was a dedicated member of the Royal Canadian Legion (Branch 53) and flawlessly preformed the duties as the Sgt at Arms for numerous Remembrance Day parades. He also belonged to: First Order of the Eagles, the Masonic Lodge and St. Andrew’s Anglican Church.
He was loved and respected by his family, friends and beloved Puss Cat. His gift of generosity was enjoyed by all. If he had it and you wanted it – he gave it. He lived by these words:
There is a destiny
That makes us brothers
None goes his way alone
All that we put into others
Comes back into our own
Fred is survived by his sister Linda Cox (Ron); nieces Joan Fredericks, Lisa Elzinga (Dan) and nephew Ronald Mac Gillivary (Nikki); his great nieces and nephews Tara, Ryan, Andrea, Megan and Krista; his great great nephew Liam and many other relatives.
Fred was predeceased by his parents Fred and Joan Mills and his sister Joyce Fredericks.
At Fred’s request no services and in lieu of flowers he requested donations be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
