Jennifer will be remembered first for the life she lived beyond titles and timelines—a woman of quiet strength, deep loyalty, and enduring warmth. Her life was shaped by close relationships, meaningful traditions, and a genuine care for others that showed itself in both small, thoughtful gestures and lifelong devotion.
She found joy in connection: in time spent with family, in friendships that spanned decades, and in the comfort of familiar places she loved. Those who knew her will remember her resilience, her gentle spirit, and the steady presence she brought into their lives.
Jen will be lovingly remembered by her brother Geoffrey (Pat) Leney; niece Beverley (Rob) Lockie (née Leney); nephews Colin (Leah) and Paul Leney; great niece and nephew Christina and Jonathan Lockie; and cousin Barbara Elliott (née Barton).
She will also be deeply missed by stepchildren Sandie, Dan (Tami) and Julia Ferguson as well the Ferguson grandkids; Danielle, Blake, Janel (Tony) Lachlan (Tayler), Marshall (Ashley), Anneliese (Jake), Aiden (Solange) and Haele (Gabriela) and many Ferguson great-grandkids, as well as stepson Owen Askew-Smith (Janet) and Askew grandchildren Elizabeth & Emily.
Also many dear friends including Carol and Shirley.
All will remember her warmth, resilience, and enduring presence in their lives.
Jennifer was predeceased by her beloved husband of 26 years, Godfrey Ferguson; her parents, Ulrica (Buster) Leney (née Norie) in 1975 and Eric Leney in 1988; her brother, Jonathan Leney in 1976; her stepdaughter, Noelene Askew-Smith in 2018; and her beloved aunts Marjorie Barton, Joy Norie and Elisabeth Norie.
Jennifer was a long-time resident of Duncan and a proud member of a family whose roots in the Cowichan Valley stretch back to 1897. She carried that heritage with quiet pride throughout her life, remaining closely connected to her community and its history. Her career with the Cowichan Valley Regional District spanned 30+ years until her retirement in 2002.
Her life was enriched by a love of travel in her early years, exploring destinations overseas, and later by cherished winters spent in Hawaii with Godfrey. In her youth, she was an avid tennis player, and throughout her life she found peace and fulfillment in gardening.
She cultivated not only a beautiful garden at home but also gave her time as a volunteer gardener for many years at Cairnsmore Place in Duncan, where her father lived in later years, and The Cowhichan Valley Hospice.
The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the health care professionals involved in Jen’s care at Cowichan District Hospital in Duncan, notably the initial team in ER and the incredibly compassionate team on 2 South and 2 North.
They are also deeply thankful to friends Carol and Shirley, who remained at Jen’s bedside during her time in hospital and to the staff of Wedgewood House, where Jen resided in her later years.
A service will be held in her memory on May 23, 2026 at 1:00 p.m. at The Anglican Church of St. John the Baptist, at 3295 Cobble Hill Road followed by tea at 2:00 p.m. A private family interment will follow at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, Cowichan Station.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Cowichan Valley Hospice Society.
