

May 4, 1915 – August 28th, 2014
On the afternoon of August 28th, Margaret Mitchell (née Gardner), died peacefully. Margaret (Oma) was predeceased by her husband, Bert and son, Rodney. She is survived by sons Stephen (Gail), Robert (Liliosa), Christopher (Jane), Michael, and David; eight grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren and one sister, Emily Welsh (London, Ontario).
Margaret was born in Gourock, Scotland and spent her early years on the Isle of Wight. She was an ambulance attendant in the London Auxiliary Ambulance Service (LAAS) during World War II and came to Canada as a war bride in 1944. Until 1954 Margaret and Bert, farmed in Alberta and BC, raising six sons. That year the family moved to Duncan and in 1959, Margaret opened St. Christopher’s kindergarten on Nagle Street. She was also active in the P.T.A. of Duncan Elementary School.
Margaret and Bert instructed Scottish Country Dance for several years. Margaret had a life-long interest in music and literature. She was a passionate CBC Radio listener.
A celebration of Margaret’s life will be held at the Quamichan Inn on Saturday, October 18th from 2:00 to 5:00pm. In her memory, the family is arranging a bursary for post-secondary studies in Early Childhood Education and Care. Details about this bursary will be provided at Margaret’s Celebration of Life.
