Mary Henry Sorrell, age 97, formerly of Dunn, died Sunday, October 17, 2021 at Glenn A, Kiser Hospice House in Salisbury, NC.
Mary was born on September 17, 1924 in Harnett County the daughter of the late James Marshall Henry and Bertie Lee Weeks Henry and is preceded in death by her husband, John Lloyd Sorrell, Jr. She is also preceded in death by a son, John Lloyd Sorrell, III and sisters, Thearl Forbes and Flora Smith.
Mary retired with 30 plus years as a Registered Nurse, she began her career at Betsy Johnson Hospital in the emergency room, to nursing in industrial businesses, nursing home and private practice with Dr. William Sutton before retiring.
Mary moved from Raeford to Greensboro after the death of her husband in 2002, to be near her family. She was a member of the O’Henry Woman’s Club and Forrest Oak Country Club also a member of the American Business Women’s Association. While living in Greensboro she became known as “The Queen Mary” by her daughter’s friends. Everyone there loved her and she became a second mother to many of them.
In her early years in Dunn, she was a member of Divine Street United Methodist Church, when she moved to Wallace she attended the Wallace Methodist Church and in Greensboro she attended Community in Christ, Presbyterian.
A Graveside Service will be held Thursday, October 21, 2021 at 11:00 am at Greenwood Cemetery in Dunn.
She is survived by: Daughters: Mary Ann Sorrell Rouse & (husband) Jimmy of Greenville, NC and Jan Sorrell Greene & (husband) Harlen of Cape Coral, Fl.
Grandchildren: Harlen Greene, Jr. & (wife) Roberta; James Lloyd Rouse & (wife) Shauna; Heather Greene Jones & (husband) Tommy.
Great Grandchildren: Phoenix Steven Greene, Kristen Halley Rouse, Allison Brooke Rouse, Ryan James Rouse & Haley Sorrell Greene.
