Ruth Urban, Wife of former Buffalo News Publisher, dies at 96
Ruth (Dolly) Wickwire Urban, Age 96, died peacefully on August 2nd in Buffalo, New York. Daughter of the late Ward Alington Wickwire and Ruth Robinson Wickwire. Dolly lived a long and active life. She enjoyed her family and friends, was an avid bridge player, acted in musicals at the Garret Club, enjoyed swimming and her numerous collections. Dolly’s many associations included serving on the Board of Directors and as President of the Junior Board of the Buffalo Children’s Hospital, the Republican Women’s Club, and the Garret Club; and was on the Board of Directors of Buffalo State Teachers College and The Buffalo Philharmonic. She was active in many other civic groups throughout her lifetime. Dolly traveled extensively, first studying in Europe as a young woman. In her later years she visited the British Isles, Hong Kong, China, Thailand, Hawaii and throughout the United States. Dolly was a graduate of the Franklin Elementary School and the Ethel Walker School, class of 1938. She was predeceased by her husband, Henry Zeller Urban, former publisher of The Buffalo News, who passed away in 2014.
She is survived by her children Ruth Smith, Florence (David) Hunn, Henry (Peggy) Urban and Ward (Lisa) Urban; her grandchildren Anna Smith (David) Grainger, David (Lauren) Hunn, Henry (Shannon) Hunn, Robin Smith (Adam Fedock), Ward W. Urban, John Urban and Christopher Urban; and her great grandchildren Emersen Hunn, Sadie Hunn and August Grainger.
