

George Sleeper, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and respected community leader, passed away peacefully on March 22, 2026, at the age of 82. Born on April 21, 1943, in Buffalo, New York, George lived a life filled with love, service, and dedication to his family and community. George was the cherished husband of Barbara Sleeper (nee Watson), his high school sweetheart whom he married on May 2, 1964. Together, they shared over six decades of marriage, creating a life of warmth and joy, overflowing with love for their family. Barbara was the light of George's life, and their love story was a testament to their unwavering commitment to one another. A proud graduate of East Aurora High School, class of 1961, George's early years were marked by a sense of duty and service. He enlisted in the United States Navy shortly after graduation, serving his country from 1961 to 1965. This experience instilled in him a profound sense of honor and responsibility, values he carried throughout his life. George's professional journey led him to a distinguished career at IBM, where he dedicated 30 years of service. He later contributed his talents to the Department of Veterans Affairs for three years and Deloitte for seven years. His work ethic and dedication were matched only by his commitment to helping others. Deeply rooted in his faith, George was a lifetime member of the First Presbyterian Church of East Aurora, where he served as both Deacon and Elder. He found joy and camaraderie in attending the Back Row Boys with his fellow church members, a fellowship that enriched his life deeply. George's passion for service extended beyond his professional and religious life into his community. He served as a Village Board Trustee for East Aurora from 1980 to 1988, demonstrating his commitment to improving the lives of those around him. His involvement with the Boy Scouts as an Assistant Scout Master for Troop 513 inspired many young men, instilling in them the values of leadership and service. A man of many interests, George enjoyed sailing and cruise traveling with Barbara, exploring new places and creating cherished memories together. He was an avid fan of the Buffalo Sabres, Bills, and Bisons, often sharing his love of sports with his family. His enthusiasm for life was contagious, and he took immense pride in the accomplishments of his daughters and grandchildren. George was a highly esteemed member of the Freemasonry community, having served as Past Master of Blazing Star Lodge #694, Past High Priest of Royal Arch Masons #282, Past Commander of Tancred Commandery of the Knights Templar, and Past Master of Hamburg Council Royal and Select Masters. He was honored to receive the Knight of the York Cross of Honour, a testament to his dedication and service to Freemasonry. He was also a proud member of the VFW Elma Post 5861, where he connected with fellow veterans, sharing stories and camaraderie.
George is survived by his devoted wife, Barbara, and their loving family: daughters Susan (Jeffrey) Woodworth and Sandra (Rick) Lehr; grandchildren Samantha, Megan, and Rachel Woodworth, and Brandon and Matthew Lehr. His family was his greatest joy, and he took immense pride in each of their accomplishments. Arrangements by Wood Funeral Home.
