BERTALAN, Maria (nee Mesterhazy) of East Aurora, NY passed away peacefully on July 24th, 2021 at age 92. She was born on the 4th of July 1929 in Hungary and fled the country with 12 others during the Hungarian Revolution in 1956. The group was sponsored by The First Presbyterian Church who assisted in finding housing, clothing, food, employment and helped them adjust to their new homeland. She lived the rest of her life in East Aurora. She worked for many years in Buffalo as a sewing machine operator, making parachutes and filling government orders. She also worked for Luminescent Systems in East Aurora as an assembler and retired in 1997. She also performed seamstress work and alterations for many. Her children and grandchildren were her greatest joy. Maria was a genuine survivor who was adored by anyone who met her. A wonderful and creative seamstress, she loved to garden, cook and always enjoyed baking Hungarian treats. Maria was a longtime member of St. George's Catholic Church in Jewettville, as well as the East Aurora Senior Center. Maria is survived by her three children; Kati (Jay) Hennig, Gabor (Karen), and Paul (Lisa) Bertalan; her sister Martha Szabo; and her grandchildren, Kristy (Josh) Miller, Jillian Hennig, Jacob Bertalan, Lauren Bertalan, Amanda Brown, Erik Bertalan as well as four great-grandchildren. The family will be present on Thursday from 4-8 PM at the WOOD FUNERAL HOME 784 Main Street, East Aurora. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday at 10 AM at St. George's Church. Please assemble at the church. If desired, contributions may be made to St. George's Church. Online condolences may be shared at www.woodfh.com.

To Kati and family, my thoughts and prayers of comfort for you all. It was a couple weeks ago, I recalled the 7/7/77 party we had at your home on Grover Rd and how your mom was busy in the kitchen making something for us and reminding you to be a good girl. It made me smile thinking back to that. Hugs to you.

I met Maria at the East Aurora Farmers' Market many years ago. I looked forward each Sat. to her cheerful visit to my booth. She was one of the most friendly people I have ever met. She will be greatly missed. RIP Maria.
