I miss you mom and will hold you in my heart and dreams forever..Thank you for being the best mom, "mother"-in law to Luke, and grandma to Danielle and Christopher....a piece of us was lost the day you passed....We love you..

Nancy and I first met playing tennis together in a mixed doubles league at the East Hartford Racquet Club, over 28 years ago.  After the second time that we played tennis together she casually mentioned, that she was going to Florida for a conference and that she would be back in a week or so.  I couldn’t wait until the next tennis night, so I went through the phone book looking for her parent’s phone number, so that I could call them to find out exactly when she would be back in town, so that I could call her to ask her out on a date.  After a few wrong numbers I found the right LoGiudice household.  Nancy’s mom, Anntoinette, answered the phone and as you can imagine she was quite skeptical about a strange guy calling her, asking questions about her daughter.  However, after presenting the facts and asking her to have Nancy call me when she was available I had started to win her over.  That date did happen and I was eventually formally introduced to her family.

What struck me right off was the special closeness that Ann shared with her daughters.  She spoke to both of them daily and usually multiple times every day.  As I became a regular visitor to Ann’s and Harry’s home she made me feel welcome and before long we were planning a wedding and the rest as they say is history.  

Over the years Ann and I regularly played scrabble games and I always looked forward to those times, plus as an added bonus, if we had a game planned I could almost always count on some apple squares as an after game treat.  I think she did that to distract me from the game and that might explain why she did quite well against me.  

Of the many, many things that Nancy and I have to thank Ann for the most important was the time that she dedicated to taking care of our kids.  Ann and Harry worked their retirement schedule around caring for Danielle and then Christopher on a regularly weekly schedule.  That was the most precious gift we could have received as she gave us peace of mind while we were at work.  

When the kids got a little older and we started to take family vacations, we started out with a trip to Wild Wood NJ, with Ann and Harry, just as they used to do with Diane and Nancy, many years ago.  It was a wonderful time and we left there with great memories which will always be with us.


In the last ten years or so, after Ann’s illness started to take her from us, we were witness to the dedication and devotion that Harry showed Ann throughout her life and especially at her time of need.  The nearly 64 years that Ann and Harry had together has been a standard that the rest of us can only aspire to.

Ann’s well lived life was its own reward and a testament to a wife and mother who will always be cherished.

Memories of Mom

While it is never easy to loose a loved one the impact of having my mother loose her life to a 20 year plus struggle with Alzheimer’s disease during the Christmas season seemed overwhelming and much more than I could bear.

It was only after much reflection that I began to gain the realization that my mom died during a time when our family was all home together, when her grand-daughter Danielle and her husband Larry were home from Washington State and her grandson Christopher was home from Florida on school break.

It was about family – a foundation that my mom set with us from the very beginning –is the essence of who we are today.

Her parents Victoria and Anthony came to America from Italy by way of Ellis Island and eventually settled in East Hartford.

The youngest of nine children, my mom spoke little of the trying times they had as a family of eleven and spoke only of the fond memories she had as a child/adolescent – of learning how to drive because she always had to move her brother’s cars in and out of the driveway and would sometimes take the car “around the block”   

Her dad died when she was barely 20 so it was up to her brothers to oversee her dating, which from her accounts was like having the FBI/CIA surveying her at all times.   

But as fate would have it, my mom met my dad at a YMCA dance where my dad, not being under the influence of alcohol, so he says, began introducing my mom to his service buddies as the “future Mrs. LoGiudice” as he knew that night that he had met “the” woman of his dreams. 

The future proposal and ultimate marriage lasted 63 years. 

Living initially with her brother Frank and his wife Kitty, they moved to Tiffany Road to raise my sister and I. 

What I remember the most of my years there were the family gatherings which took place with my dad’s friends and my mom’s family – 18 uncles and aunts 16 of whom settled in East Hartford and at least a trillion cousins so it seemed –   

Many New Years Eves’ parties were at our home with other gatherings so large we would have to go to a local park where we all indulged in hot dogs, hamburgers and of course spaghetti and meatballs.

Being a woman who was ahead of her times my mom entered the workforce, part-time, when we were older.

She balanced her job while keeping our home spick and span, making home made dinner’s every night which we ate as a family (no cell phones – I mean black and white TV allowed) to share the days happenings or discuss our next door neighbors latest gimmick of sunning herself by reflecting the sun off of aluminum foil to tan her face and always, always having time to listen to my sister and I about the woes of dating or other seemingly life altering events. 

Tiffany Road was and is my palace –a home which grew not only with additions (our own bedroom, a two car garage built by my dad and my mom’s brothers, but completed with a special touch my mom had with decorating – a home which to this day gives me a total feeling of warmth and safety.  

As if her plate was not full enough it was my mom who would write some of my dad’s papers while he was attending the Univ of Hartford while working two jobs at the same time – including Moby Dick which I believe was almost as long as the book itself.

Without a doubt she should have received an Honorary Degree.    

While my mom thoroughly enjoyed being out in the workforce it was her sense of family that would take her out the work force to take care of Danielle and then Christopher – days she would speak of for many years as only a grandmother could.

She loved my dad and together they would make time for just the two of them – taking dancing lessons which led to routine Sat night dating and dancing excursions.  They were quite the pair and would often clear a dance floor as others would look on with amazement at how well they flowed across the room.   

And it was with my with my dad’s sense of adventure that they were able enjoy many vacations/cruises – memories of which my dad shared every day with my mom through her long, long journey with Alzhheimers.

My dad’s unwavering commitment to my mom will be with me always.

For a man who quivered at the thoughts of going to a hospital or nursing home to visit someone in his early years he became my mom’s rock. He lovingly and unselfishly visited her every day be it in the assisted living facility or in the nursing home where she  spent the last three years.

There was no question in anyone’s mind that even in her advanced stages of this disease she responded only to his voice, his touch.
He had a kind word for other residents in the facilities, who he had nicknames for and befriended the staff – never complaining and always thanking them for the care they provided to my mom. 

He is a remarkable man indeed.       

I truly hope and pray that my mother is in a better place – that she is with God –at peace and able to now remember the beautiful memories we had as a family – 

And so with this Christmas season I have once again been blessed with the greatest gift one could receive – the gift of family – one that I treasure today and will always.

I am so sorry to see the passing of Mrs. LoGuidice - I have fond memories of her from Tiffany Road from so many years ago.  She was always a class act and really loved her family.
