passed away peacefully at home on June 10, 2025, surrounded by his family. Born in Hartford, he was the husband of the late Barbara J. Paul, and the son of the late Anthony Paul and Mildred English, and stepson of the late Paul E. English.
Ted was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church in East Hartford.
He proudly served his country for 33 years in the United States military, uniquely serving in all four branches. He began his service as a Marine in 1950, later serving in the Air Force and the Army, and ultimately completing 23 years in the U.S. Navy, retiring with the rank of Chief Petty Officer. He wore his service with quiet pride and deep respect.
After his military career, Ted worked as a foreman for the A&P Food Stores warehouse for 25 years, remaining there until the company moved.
Ted believed strongly in giving back to his community. In the north end of East Hartford, he coached many youth baseball teams before transitioning to umpiring, where he became a respected member of the Hartford Board of Umpires for 23 years. He was known to be tough but fair—and always ready with a smile or a good story. A loyal Red Sox fan, he never missed an opportunity to remind others (especially Yankees fans) where his allegiance stood.
Ted was also a member of the East Hartford Elks Lodge #2063, where he served as Exalted Ruler. He was active in the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Manchester, where he served as M.O.A. In his spare time, Ted found great joy in music, singing as a tenor with the Silk City Chorus and with several smaller barbershop quartets over the years.
Above all, Ted loved his family. He leaves his children:
Dion B. Paul and Scott A. Paul, both of Manchester;
Gary L. Paul and his wife Carol of Hudson, FL;
Robert P. Paul and his wife Kathy of East Falmouth, MA;
and Tim M. Paul and his wife Patti of Vernon.
He was the proud grandfather of 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him tremendous joy.
Ted lived a life of service — to his country, his community, his family, and his faith. He will be remembered for his humor, his voice that could fill a room, his steady presence, and the deep love he carried for those around him.
A Celebration of Life and Graveside Service with military honors will be held on Saturday, May 30, 2026, at the Connecticut State Veterans Cemetery in Middletown.
