Alden was born and raised in Minneapolis, the son of Anton and Calma Olson. He received his B.A. and M.A. degrees in economics from the University of Minnesota. He later earned his Ph.D in finance from the same institution. He was one of the first Chartered Financial Analyst in the country.
Known to many at the Graduate School of Business, Epply Center, now known as Eli Broad Graduate School, he was a respected Professor and successful stock market investor using his “Theory of Olsonomics”. Admired by his students and colleagues for his talent of bringing reality to the classroom, his real satisfaction came from hearing about the successes of former students.
Aldy loved music, hunting, fishing, skiing and travel. He played softball all his life and had fun managing “Da Bulls” Senior’s team as recently as three years ago. He and Barbara traveled extensively from Antarctica to Africa, the Olympic Games in Norway to the Galapagos Islands.
Alden was a kind and thoughtful father who enthusiastically espoused the value of an honestly earned dollar and the wisdom of thriftiness. He taught his children the importance of honesty and integrity when building relationships. His model of faithfulness and generosity to his family was noble and magnanimous.
Aldy will be remembered to those closest to him by the chuckle of his laughter and the twinkle of his blue Norwegian eyes.
